Russell Crowe seems to think that England is about to get harsh lesson in Test cricket, and that we'll gat thrashed in every test. All this from a knob-head that can't seem to remember which country he comes from.

And yes, Ponting is a class act,as is Shane Warne.

Harmison has got to get going if we are to stand any chance. he looked shite this morning. his first ball in the first over was the widest ball i've ever seen.

Australia declared at 9/602 and England are 3/53 already in the first innings.

On the musical front, the Barmy Army trumpeteer has been evicted from the ground on both days. (supposedly musical instruments have been banned).

Embarrassing, that's what it is. No bottle, most of them. WTF was that Strauss shot all about?

Sadly I fear that the English media have done them in already - bigged it up 14 months ago when we scroted it by a very narrow margin, and they are like rabbits in headlights now. Banger's already cracked, and Harmison is bowling like a 12 year old with a blindfold on being made to use his other arm for the first time. Cook won't get dropped ten times every innings in Australia like he has everywhere else. Prediction? 5-0

I think I'd want 200,000-1 to put any money on that shower! Not even Botham and a team full of drunken Aussies with no bats and hands tied behind their backs would save this one!

Looks like we are gonna get a victory target of around 800:laugh:

The only interesting thing is the Aussies didnt enforce the follow on. England teams have been known on occasion to bat out a day and a half for a draw, although it is admittedly, highly unlikely.

Record margin of victory is 675 runs..England beat Oz in 1928!

They're just looking to completely grind England into the dirt and set the tone for the rest of the series - the game was as good as won by the end of day 2. :\ohwell:

I just got a text message from a Barmy Army man in the crowd at the Gabba, saying he overheard an ABC journo saying that Ricky didnt declare cos he was ordered not to, by the Aussie cricket board, who couldnt afford refunding the last day or two's play.

I haven't heard that here yet. I'm sure i would have it is true

wouldn't that soemhow contravene the laws of the game?

I still stay he should have enforced the follow on and only batted again if needed.

As regards to any 'psychological advantage', I think England gained more from the 'extended' play by batting well and gaining some much needed confidence.

Well its a strange decision.. I know you agree Ron. My source is pretty good too, and no it wouldnt contravene any laws as long as its 'unofficial'.

Mind you KP losing his wicket in the first over ruins any hopes of a draw.

I'm doing a rain dance.

But Ron, you gotta admit.. it would be over by now, so it does make some kinda sense.

How the fuck would that contravene the rules of the game? It's the captain's choice whether to enforce the follow-on or not. Sure the ACB could advise him that it is in Cricket Australia's best interests to take the game into a fifth day, shall we say, but that wouldn't contravene the rules of the game.

Well done Aussie, guess we'll have to settle for a 4-1 win this time around! ;)

Not sure how, but have managed to catch the start of each day's play. Not sure why either, as we've been royally smashed by the convicts. Still, had to gave them a 1-0 lead last year to make a contest of it ;-)

Why on Earth are England playing when most of the team are woefully short of Match practice? Harmison should have been bowling 40 overs a game for the last month. Gilo, while he is our King, hasnt played in a year. And is he really worth it for the extra 20 or 30 runs he might give us over Monty? How many non one day games has Flintoff played in the last 6 months? two? three? Same with Jimmy Anderson. Part of the reason england were so awful is because they were pissing time away playing the ICC champions trophy.

just had to add my input: after spending most of yesterday afternooon and night hanging out with the Barmy Army, i have to admit, firstly, i dont think all english people are twats anymore,i had a bender of a night with them.

Whilst drinking at the Coopers Alehouse in Adelaide, i met a guy who claimed to be Mark E Smiths cousin (maybe he was, maybe he wasnt, who's to know), but when i put Joy Division's "LWTUA" on the video jukebok, i had a chilling sensation, watching 100 people sing and dance to it in the pub.

Great night Poms, thanks for the hangover.

Good on you Pommies for making some decent runs yesterday - I hate to see a one sided contest. Can't believe they wouldn't allow anyone to bring in a bugle to the ground. Old farts - no one is allowed to have any fun anymore.

I think cricket is boring these days compared to the days of Rodney Marsh, Dennis Lillie, Alan Knott etc........... These guys had much more character and a real sense of fun - but I suppose the same could be said for all sports these days - it's all down to money.

Anyway, let's hope this test at the beautiful Adelaide Oval turns out to be a cracker.

You have no idea........ can you refuse to let the fookers leave when the tour is over, instead lock them in a training camp until they can work out what those five bits of wood each end are for. How does a team dominate the first six sessions and then fall apart for the next nine?

Test cricket is all about sessions. Win more sessions than the oppo and you stand a good chance of winning the match. Playing for two days isn't enough unless you knock up 500 and then have the oppo 100 all out twice.

Tabloids? Sure, not that I know anyone who actually reads them!

Don't assume that there should be two low innings' totals to follow. There have been two draws here in recent years (NZ and SA I think) where the pitch got progressively easier to bat on and teams in last have ground out draws.

i guess there is one good thing for people who have tickets for the remaining two tests.

Rumours circulating today that Shane Warne is going to retire from Test Cricket at the end of the Ashes series.

So i guess you can watch him get his 700th Test wicketm and say you were there for his end.

I think it's been quite an interesting series so far, entirely expected outcomes as you simply can't take three world class players out of a side that relied on luck an home advantage to sneak a win last year and expect the replacements to surpass themselves. Basically Fletcher and the selectors got it wrong big style in appointing Flintoff, it's the same as when Botham got the job in 81, the ugly unseen/unappreciated bits don't get the same due care and attention, like knuckling down to win sessions. Strauss has more of that mentality. Not picking Panesar for the first two was crass, he's the one guy who can make a real difference, but the real losses for me were Vaughan, who's a tough cookie as a captain, probably the only current Englishman who has the Australian captaincy approach, and Simon Jones, the only guy in the England side who can continually reverse it at good pace and keep the pressure on all day. Without him, and with Harmy likely to endanger gully rather than the batsman, the English attack simply doesn't have the penetration required to dominate a side as experienced and well-drilled as the Australian one. 5-0? Probably. It won't be raining I guess, so unless someone can step up to the plate and deliver like never before, Warney will get his send-off in style.

There are also rumours that McGrath is retiring.

I think the last test the Aussies lost at home was in 2003 and the last series in 1993 against the Windies - its a tough tour!

To me the England attack has the penetration and variety you need to succeed on different sorts of tracks, but it doesn't have the discipline to create any sustained pressure on the team they're bowling to, that's their downfall.

All the little things add up - as good as Pietersen is, he made no attempt to protect the tailenders at Perth, taking a single off the first ball of the over etc. That's poor cricket! The wicketkeeper inspires no confidence and creates no pressure when he's behind the stumps, dont even have to mention his batting - he's not good enough. Stresscothick - wtf? He's finished. However good Giles is for the dressing room, he's no great loss to the squad either. They should use the last two games to try out Dalrymple and Read, maybe Plunkett and Joyce too.

I know Warne is fatter than he's ever been but why would he consider retiring??

Warne's bowling workload is phenomenal and must be taking some toll on him. Get the feeling he'd rather bow out on top than slowly see batsmen dominate him. Very simple bloke, Warne. As Kerry O'Keefe noted recently, "If he didn't have the gift with the rock, he'd be mowing lawns."

From what I saw at the WACA, outside of Gilly's half-hour of sublime brutality, Panesar looked more likely to take a wicket than any other Englishman. Hayden never looked comfortable and even Hussey struggled at times. Why that dud Giles had his spot earlier is beyond me. His batting? Since when do you play bowlers for their ability with the willow? Defensive mentality. Mahmood looks county-grade. Jones was a huge loss, Harmy is mentally fritzed but wouldn't count him out yet. Freddie's bowling and batting are stumbling under the weight of the captaincy, Vaughan can't come back soon enough. Hoggard's been impressive in patches. On other tours, this will be quite a useful bowling line-up and with guys like Cook and Pietersen coming through with the bat, you've got a lot to look forward to.

On the flipside, life after Warney will be tough for us. He's such an asset, year after year we just assume that he'll run through teams when we need him to. And like clockwork, he delivers. Without McGrath and Warney, there are chinks in the armour. Batting will hold up for a few years yet, Pup is a ready-made replacement for Marto and Jacques should fill Langers' Pumas. While we have some raw fast bowling coming through, it won't peak for years yet. Lee and Clarke don't hold a candle to Warne and McGrath as a primary strikeforce and we'll struggle to bowl out teams like we've done in the last decade. Wouldn't be surprised if Gilly calls it a day after the World Cup either.

So, big transition phase upcoming. When Lillee, Chappell and Marsh all bowed out together in the 80s, it created a void in Australian cricket that took a generation to fill. Hope this exodus is orchestrated a little differently.

Was I mistaken or did Channel 9 just use the end of Atmosphere for their slo-mo of Andrew Symonds' 100?!

Sums up the whole series really...

England 101 - 2. all out 159.

Aussies 84 - 5. 372 - 7.

This tour we bat up to 4 and then fall. If the Aussies struggle during the first 5 wickets then someone steps up to the plate.

Can't believe I bought a scalp ticket for tomorrow so I watch an innings defeat :\ohwell:

Mind you, Hayden was out 4 times before Rudi Koertzen managed to put his finger up :wanker:

Great work flintoff.

Symonds in the 90's and you put on Collinwood - 1 test wicket to his name.

He gets smacked for the 100 and you put on KP - 1 test wicket to his name.

:banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

shite all round.

Call me unpatriotic if you like, but I'm starting to think that tenner on 5-0 was wise!

Thank you Freddie and the clowns, I shall now go off and spend my £130 on a new bat for the summer 2007 season.
