ok, we all know this group did a really good version of BizarreLove Triangle, but who actually likes this band and knows their other stuff? They've seemed to have disapeared six years ago, which is too bad cuz they had a really sweet whimsical quality about them. oh yeah, they also do a really good cover verson of "let the sun shine in"

Sorry Chum, but I thought that Frentes Cover was Utter SHIT! No offense to anyone who likes them, but they mauled Bizarre Love Triangle. There is a reason that they just dropped off the face of the earth-they just kinda sucked! When I worked at a Record store, we had to play their last album sometimes, and it was just horrible. :\ohwell:

I hate people covering NewOrder songs badly..

in fact i cant think of many good covers i've heard of NewOrder songs at all to be honest!!

Adam booked Frente to play the Surf Club in Summer Bay circa 1995. Given his reputation as a bit of a chancer few people reckoned they'd show being such a big act and all. The young scamp proved them all wrong however when they did in fact make an appearance and turned in a rip roaring set.

Yes I do watch Home & Away religiously...but only for the burdz!

I remember that!

Weren't Big Pig featured at some point too?

Well remembered Kezzie. That was some time in '97 (how sad am I!!) Edwyn Colins' " A Girl Like You" could also be heard regularly in the background at Aila's (RIP) Bayside Diner.

Had to make a pilgrimage to Palm Beach where it's filmed the last time I was down that way. No joy with bumping into Sophie though...ah well.

Rebekah Elmaloglou - where is she now?

Grahame -I think the Big Pig storyline featured a bit earlier than 97. Sally was still a pug nosed brat and owner of Dag Dog and I seem to remember the storyline being that all the older foster kids got to go to 'the city' to see Big Pig live, but she couldn't, so she threw a strop

Stop it! You guys are scaring me, reminiscing about H&A with such alacrity.. To think someone outside of this country actually knows of Big Pig! Frightening.

Regarding Frente, they've been defunct for quite a few years now. Angie Hart went on to front a few moderately successful indie outfits, and I can vaguely recall her being attached these days to a US musician of some note.. The details escape me.

To her credit, she did have a dreamy quality about her and you can flame me all you want but I thought her BLT take was interesting. It really showcased the memorable melody of the song and the singalong lyric. Barney struggles to write such catchy melodies today IMHO.

Whenever anyone dares to cover the sacred cows of our music idols, the obvious response is always to savage them. And most of them probably deserve it. However, when musicians such as Frente strip BLT down; or Moby slows down NDF (see the Jools Holland version); or Smashing Pumpkins transform Depeche's Never Let You Down into a refined guitar piece, I feel it adds a new angle to the work and actually pays legitimate homage to it.

Hell, even Bernard liked Frente's take.

Think you might be right there Kezzie, I was gettin confused with some other dodgy Aussie-rock combo. As the great Ray Meagher would say I'm nowt but a "flamin' gillah"!

She hates Frente. She's met Fugazi. She loves MBV. What a woman.

Hmmm...I had brought up Big Pig in a chat with the Laughing Martian...I thought for sure if anyone knew of a band with, what, 15 drummers, it would be him, but alas, no.

So I didn't just dream up Big Pig. I vaguely recall an ad for their record in Spin magazine in the 80s...what was the tag line, i.e., their schtick? One chick, six drummers and a pizza place?

A refresher, please.

Hey GNU!! Look here Look here!! Remember what I told you about MY other band "!BASHER!" ?? The industrial-strength experimental drum band I've been fronting since 1992 which features nothing but just SIX collaborating drummers all beating twenty shades of multicoloured shite out of their kits - two female, four male, and with one of them screaming thru a megaphone?? That's influenced by PIGFACE actually - one of my favourite EVER "bands" on the face of this earth!!

Here's a list of the tracks I've written with !Basher! to date. Sadly none of them have been performed "live" yet as we don't know of an audience thick-skinned and courageous enough to sit through one of our sets - or even a promoter who'd risk putting us on at any open-air event (we could just empty the place if that happened :evil4: )

First album: "T.F.C." written in 1998.

  1. 30-second Drum Therapy
  2. This Ain't Fucking Loungecore
  3. Premium Bombs
  4. Coffee Table D'n'B - Nein Danke!
  5. Arsequake (Fill Yer Pants)
  6. Menage A Twat
  7. Ned Sherrin Is A Wanker
  8. T.F.C. = No Return
  9. Lay Off My Milkshake (Baby)
  10. Attack Of The 50 Foot Dildo
  11. You're Gonna Get Your Fuckin Head Kicked In

Second Mini-album "Planet Shafting" written in 1999.

  1. T.Y.O.T. (Ten Years Of Torture)
  2. Mariah Carey - Chicken Arse
  3. Shit Hits The Fan
  4. Song For Ted Bundy
  5. Gonads Go Mad
  6. March Of The Superannuated Slaphead Jizz-Bags

And no, we won't be doing Glastonbury. Or Lollapalooza. Ever. In case you wondered.

 we had a rather extremely large piece of...uh, artificial mystery meat which wended its way into our practice spot quite unbeknownst to anyone occupying said spot at the time, back when we were at the old one!

it appeared draped around a mic stand, partially suspended by an XLR cable leading up to a big pile of nothing actually at the top of the stand. no one in my band knew where it had come from, but since we shared the spot (at the time) with another band who we didn't really know, we assumed it was theirs. and since it wasn't *our* mic stand, we didn't really care one way or the other. i grabbed the stand and made it dance threateningly for our bassist, but that was that...no one even really wanted to touch it, since no one knew where it'd come from!

it wasn't till much later on that our bassist and one of our guitarists showed up at the same time that the other band was practicing. they listened to the other band practice for awhile, and of course got into conversation with them. someone in the other band then asked why we had this dildo hanging around off the mic stand, and it became clear that NO ONE residing in that spot knew where it had come from in the first place!

'course, at the time, we had a broken window... :skeptic:

Am I the only one who likes Frente! around here? I liked their first album "Marvin the Album" and tracks like "Accidentely Kelly Street". And their cover of BLT equals the original one in my opinion.

TWO OTHER acts also recorded guitar-y takes of this song.... Frente were by no means the first. They were beaten to it buy a fellow Australian band from Sydney (half of whom are actually UK-based) called EVEN AS WE SPEAK who did a version of the song - in EXACTLY THE SAME STYLE AS FRENTES!! (Compare and contrast the two - they're almost IDENTICAL!! ) in 1992. Then, three years before Even As We Speak did their cover - released on a 5-track EP called "Nothing Ever Happens" on SARAH RECORDS - a Cardiff, Wales, duo by the name of DEVINE AND STATTON recorded an acoustic take of BLT for their debut album "The Prince Of Wales" on Les Disques Du Crepuscule Records... This version was very minimalist and stripped down, but still exactly the same arrangement as those other two later versions - just featuring guitars - but a little slower in tempo.

You should seek ALL THREE versions out and marvel at how similar to one another they all sound to this day!!

Attack of the 50 ft. Dildo? I think I've seen the video for that one.

My old band (mp3.com/ofmpuk) used to do a lot of shows with a local outfit called Magoon, who performed a lovely cabaret tune called "Human Dildo." I smell a dildo compilation record. Mmmm... I'll post an mp3 if I can dig one up.

So, Martin, you're essentially admitting that your band, like Pigface, is just a pale rip off of Big Pig, huh? I've got to check out Audiogalaxy tonight to see if anyone has "Breakaway."

i'm surprised so many people did not like the Frente! version. I personally liked it a lot, it's an original sounding cover. it really brings out something different out of the song, i found that it really drew attention to barney's great lyrics when the song was stripped from the layers of keyboards and guitar (not that those layers are bad. not at all). anyways, i have a taste for that kind of acoustic music anyways, so maybe it's just a matter of taste.

the answer is so obvious! now all that's left is for the Order to do one! it'd *work*! with such things as "My Cock's As Big As the M1" and genius line changes like "and if it wasn't for your big penis...i'd be a heavenly person today," it's just ACHING to be done!

(perhaps that was an unfortunate choice of words. or perhaps not. )

I've heard all three of the versions discussed here. And you know something? I like them all.

So you're not alone matey! ;)

I have not heard any of the other covers apart from Frente' but i believe it is the squeaky whimsical quality of Angie Harts lyrics that caught me. The fact that this was bashed on TripleJ flat out had something to do with it, and out in the outback 3J was the only station i got :evil4:

one question, though. is this where one would insert the obligatory joke about Barney and quivering? or is this where one would insert the obligatory mention of the Barney/Hooky short arms/long arms comparison discussion, hrrm....?
