Got some dance music (I wish I had some taste back then, and not buy things that said "As Seen on TV") and my parents bought me classical music to make me smarter. Plus, I started to learn how to play the violin a year later.

Low Life Factory original CD, some time before I owned a CD player. Took me a long while to start collecting CDs, Technique was my 3rd (after Songs To Learn And Sing). Vinyl was king for a very long time in my house, up until 1990 everything I bought was vinyl, then I backfilled with the CD versions of everything.

I actually got a cd player ( stuffed in the bottom of a hifi) before I owned any CD's.

in fact it was a LONG time before I owned a CD, because I was waiting on something, ANYTHING I could half tolerate coming out on the format. I'm not at all sure what my first purchase actually was....I remember RENTING The Eurhymics 1984 soundtrack, and that was the first disc I played. But owned????? either Rage Hard by FGTH, or Ghostdancing by Simple minds. Both tracks oddly mark the end of me giving a fuck about anything either band did, I suspect this was largely due to the increasing effect NO were having on my brain, rather than some by-product of PCM encoded music.

I think my first NO CD was R+R!!!!!!!!!!!! I defo bought technique on cassette, as the aforementioned CDplayer had expired n fairly short order and they were still kinda pricey to buy if you wanted one that might actually work.

Does anyone have any "REAL" CD's? As in, 2 layers of optical glass or toughened plexiglass , with the data layer and reflective layer BETWEEN them? Hardly ANY made it to the shops, the "spray some silver pint on the back of one sheet of polycarbonate" technique being the key to making huge whore profits for the record companies. This is why all those early demo's of CD on TV featured stupid abuse tests like eating dinner off them or driving a car over them...but the first CD you bought from the shops went loony the first time it fell on some slightly rough carpet. They're a little better now, but damnit, if they have the phillips Compact Disc Digital Audio ensignia they should be fucking indestructable.

I was probably about 15 when I got a CD player of my own (my father had bought one in like 84 when they were super expensive and I wasn't allowed to touch it so I suffered with a tape player and turntable)

They weren't my first albums... The first album I ever bought on my own was:

I was in 4th grade and it cost 7.95 for the 12 inch and I had to buy a needle for the old record player that my uncle let me have too--that ran about 2 bucks if I remember correctly. Money came from my first baby sitting job.

My father owned a music store (instruments) when I was in 4th - 6th Grade and I used to pay attention to what all the musicians who came in said they were listening to then I'd go to the record store once a week with my baby sitting money and by an album or two. I've got some shit 12 inches this way but I've also got some cool things too like Elvis Costello and Pearl Jam and different things that kids my age weren't listening to.

Though I did buy an MC Hammer 12 in and Vanilla Ice in addition to the NKOTB album above so I did buy some shit when I was little.

We've just got these new fangled things called cassette recorders up here (that must be what you mean, right?) I just replaced my old Substance album with a tape. They're brilliant, you can use them in the car and they won't scratch. Amazing. Whatever next.

When my dad first got a CD player (and I remember a lot of this because we used to drive all over the place), there was only one store IN THE ENTIRE METRO REGION that sold CDs my first memory of going there was in 85 or 86 but I know that my dad had a cd player in 84 (like I said above) because of the model number and the reciepts he saved for ages.

But I digress, at this point 86ish...the only cds they had in stock (that didn't have to be special ordered) were motown and the beatles and oldies stuff... nothing modern. My father had to special order a ton of cds and like twice a month for the longest time our big trip out on weekends would be to the CD store to get whatever he ordered.

There is now a Hoagie shop in it's place.

Yes and some like PRINCE's PURPLE RAIN (not sure of the year i got this) was £15 way back then.Only a LIMITED selection of CD's available.Others i got at that time where HOUNDS OF LOVE-kate BUSH and a SIMPLE MINDS CD single.Didn't get the NEW ORDER stuff to a little LATER.I always seemed to want NEW twchnology at the time but NOW i don't have an IPOD or HD TV but more cos i don't have ANY money.Or HAIR!Life is a BITCH Ron!

Mine was a compilation Dance CD just after Xmas 1991 Hardcore Ecstacy. It had some good Dance tracks on there like - Joey Beltram's Energy Flash, Human Resource Dominator and the Rainforest remix of Moby's Go but also some cheesey s*** like Rozalla and DJ H Featuring Stefy LOL that's best forgotten.
