mp3 player help

Right ok i'm seriously wanting a mp3 player, will probably get one in the sales after Christmas. The thing is I don't have broadband and don't have Windows XP so an Ipod looks out of the question. All i'm really wanting is a decent mp3 player to store music 20gb plus I think, not interested in photos or videos. Can anyone recommend a mp3 player which will do that. I don't download music and I don't intend to so I need a programme which will convert my cd's into mp3 files then onto a mp3 player. I do have USB ports.

I don't know if you need XP to run it though. What system are you using?

iPod. Nothing has as many accessories (which you don't realize are so cool until you have one). Such an accessory is the FM tuner that allows you to play your iPod through ANY FM radio/stereo with really good quality. I place my iPod in the middle of the house and have all the stereos playing the same song, then takeit to my car and listen to it there with no wires attached. (plus the attachement is only $35).

Also iTunes that works with it is by far the best organizational tool for your music that the others just can't offer.

I cheated with that, I bought a 512MB one for day to day music use, and a CD based one for audiobooks and transporting large amound of music....650MB=2p BARGIN!

I am not sure about non pod ones in the 10's of gigs at all. But the Ipod is WAY overpriced and you cannae just buy a new battery in Woolworths, and you NEVER own your music, you only rent it....subscription lapses...no more tunes. I hear good things about the Sandisc ones and mixed reports about the Creative range.

Another option is a smaller capacity player that takes SD cards then you have infinite capacity.

For Conversion in windows, I used to use CDEX, free and open even on planet Dos.

You MIGHT be in trouble for not having Windows Xtra Painful. Most MP3 players ( the non shite ones anyway), are simply USB mass storage devices with a small ROM chip containing as much OS as it takes to play MP3's...as such, on XP, you just plug them in and an extra disk drive appears under My Computer, and to get files on to it, it's just copy/paste or click-drag-drop. Earlier versions of windows may require drivers, make sure that whatever you buy, either has drivers or works natevely with your version.

If you have windows ME, good fucking luck, MAYBE USB mass storage is one of the bits in it that works a bit.

avoid ipods as much as you can...i dislike them for their constant problems and the fact that they are made by apple/macintosh..if i remember correctly....

That is a big misconception there Cambo. You are talking about buying things from the iTunes store (which I have never done), but your music doesn't have to come from there.

I have over 550 albums on my harddrive that doesn't need iTunes to play....they are regular mp3s. Alot of them are burned off LimeWire and they play with no issues.

What iTunes does is organize music way better than the other mp3s players do. Keeps count of your songs, has smart playlists, when put in to random/skip mode it actually chooses songs on your ratings and how often youhave listened tothem so its more of a "smart" random, etc. Plus you have many groupings to look for your music, which other mp3s don't offer.

ack wrong keyboard, windows 98R2 added support for USB. it can be added to '98 manually. windows 95 is SOL. my sandisk just shows up as another drive and plays everyones favorite format mp3. I have 1 GB stick which is good for 20 albums or so. triple a battery lasts a week. cost me 50$. downside to fash based players is that your computer holds your catalgue. my car players reads mp3's off CD so media player 11 works well, or WinAmp if you don't need xbox360 support. my choice for $150.
