LE's own private Idaho sounds like an exciting confluence of neo-Egyptian architecture, Hooters bars that are a bit light on for hoot, Steve Guttenberg fans and of course, potatoes. Fields and fields of them. Russets, Pontiacs, Goldrush, Boise Benders, all styles, all the colours of the rainbow. Apparently they're lovingly known as 'taters by the potato-lovin' locals.

So here's a great opportunity to pose any potato questions you might have.

do people in idaho have really big ears or something? What's with all the potatoes

Has a potato ever been linked to any major political assassination plots? If so, what was the extent of their involvement?

Excellent start.

Keep 'em coming. We might just lure him out of the fields.

He's practically a potato genius and will be able to answer all your questions.

How old is a potato when it stops being a "New potato"?

do people in idaho have really big ears or something?

No. We have really big eyes, hence the spuds.

If we had really big ears we'd grow corn.

Next!

Do you steam or boil potatoes before roasting?

Indirectly, yes. It could be said that former vice president Dan Quayle's blunder with regard to the spelling of the word sealed his legacy as one of the biggest dumbshits in American history.

The kid is right, you idiot

In potato years or human time?

Ah, good question Babe. We're delving into personal preferences here, but I lean toward boiling ... that is if I'm not eating them right out of the fcuking bag while standing in the grocery store line.

LE, how long has your mayor been in office?

Since my childhood. The Mrs. looks a lot like him. She use to waitress at Hooters.

You a skin-on or skin-off kinda guy, LE?

And what about your 'taters?

This might be a good time to tell the story of the baked potato shop in Manchester called "Spud-U-Like".

Someone clever painted "Spud-U-Didn't-Like" on the wall behond the shop, with a big arrow pointing to the waste bins.

Well done graffiti-wag

Do all those Idaho white supremacists have anything against potato latkes, or does the spud-love (and deliciousness) outweigh the hate?

It's all curly fry love here, so keep your white racist ass away. :evil4:

I go with the skin on, DC, but I wouldn't say I'm a creature of habit there.

But enough about me. What toppings do you push and shove to get to when hitting the potato bar?

Potato years. Growing Season seed, to field harvest to market. Older pototoes get they moniker from being aged and cool stored don't they LE. Youngins' go straight from field, to sink to pan then table. no.

Next brings the question LE. For the new loose skinned ones. Acceptable to mix steamed or seared new potatoes if singed w/ panfried salted butter + garlic. Savoury, that sort. With cold sourcream, blushed tomato and spring onion. Or do you keep 'em seperate saved for two meals. Don't know how the belly might like the two styles mixed. Thanks.

You have to aim for the eye. It's the sweet(potato) spot.

Not a huge fan of the traditional baked spud, LE.

Of course that may be a hangin' offence in some parts, so if I was in Boise and your missus asked me how I'd like my baked 'tater, I'd smile graciously and request:

"A full-bodied Russet with a pre-softened, creamy infill jacketed by a basted skin crisped to a light rusty brown, then generously sliced and furnished with some authentic fiery Texas chilli, chunks of marinated Jalapeno, drizzled with melted Pecorino cheese beneath a small pillow of local organic sour cream and adorned with some finely-sliced scallions."

"But don't go to any trouble now."

"Failing that, any chance of a brewski, LE?"

Of course. Followed by a couple shots of ... you guessed it...

How long have you been known as the Spudgun, LE? There must be a lot of competition about.

I swiped that title from the end of the Devo tune. Figured, given the way this thread has evolved, you've put me in a position to be quick on the draw, if you will, with replies.

I wish Patrick was around. I bet he could really pose some ... er ... half-baked questions. :skeptic:

Okay, Le, here's one about the father of the potato/agriculture biz, Mr. Simplot himself. Saw an item on Can't Stop The Bleeding that the gentlemen, a billionaire, fell out of the scooter he was using at Monday's Fiesta Bowl game and hit his head on the pavement and was operated on. Any new word on his condition? That'd be a sucky way to go, after such a classic game.

BTW, if you're a Bronco fan, congrats, a helluva game that I didn't miss a second of, even when it looked bleakest. Everybody I know was watching, heck even my mother called me just after and wanted to know if I was watching it  Boise must've been nuts on Monday night.

This thread's really cooking now. The chips are down for LE, he's gonna have to work on that slice'n'dice offence to catch up.

Here's a ripper of a question.

I read somewhere that the Idado State Marching Band only plays one instrument. What instrument would that be, LE?

:\pimp3:

Hey Green, I'm happy to report that the prognosis for 'ol JR is a good one. In fact, today is his 98th birthday. Though I doubt he was lubed up on potato vodka while joy riding his scooter, I hope his weekend in Phoenix was a good one despite his tumble. Those throttle's can be touchy when you're almost a century old.

And no - I'm not a Bronco fan. I attended the University of Idaho - BSU's main rival. However, the win was a great one and it was an exciting game. A proper celebration didn't occur that night, though, because I heard nothing was set on fire.

Not the (potato)skin flute, I'm hoping.

Errr, not a question as such, but I do have a cartoon somewhere of Mr. Potato Head being mugged in an alley, telling the robber "Don't shoot me........I've got a wife and tater tots at home". :drummer:

How many chips can one make from a large russet potato???

why are chips called french fries, when in france they are called pommes frittes ? (actually that's what we call them in german as well.)

I can answer that one Ronno....because Americans have always been piss poor at geography...

and because "pommes frittes" sounds awfully girly

in german it is usually just shortened to pommes.

'frenching' is a method of slicing the potato, hence french fries, or 'frenched' fries.

Down here we enjoy devouring the pommes at sports stadiums.

So Buffy, if an American chick invited me back to her pad for some "frenching", you're saying to run for it - she's probably a slasher?

(1) Why do people cook potatoes in the microwave oven? They are really crappy.

(2) Why don't people make french fries from fresh potatoes anymore in the USA? Well, very few do blanch fries from raw potatoes and the fresh fries taste incredibly good, too good... Actually I know the answer, making fresh french fries is a greasy, time consuming, space consuming pain in the ass that nobody will do, as I have made them in a restaurant before.

(3) Why drives a guy to stick an Idaho baker up his ass? How do they plan on getting it back out?

(4) Can you commit suicide by eating potatoes with green skin?

Well PFOD, I can really only answer #3 and that could be a number of reasons for it happening here.

Long, cold winters.

Availability.

Being double-dog dared while lit up on malt liquor.

Or just good 'ol American curiosity: "Hey - there's a potato. Wonder what would happen  if I shoved it up my ass."

Disclaimer: This is all heresay ... of course... :uhoh:

... And just as Spiderman came into being when Parker got bit by the radioactive spider, LE became The Spudgun after his green potato encounter. His cape, supernatural potato knowledge and signature widelegged gait soon followed.

Those are great chips. Thick cut, not to salty like the chips from the big corporations, with plenty of jalapeno. Nicely spicy. Now those Kettle Chips are trying to bust in on their business but can't cut it.

Holy chip, Pope.

Sounds like they have all the things I crave in a spicy potato chip rolled into one. ie. Chilli and.. erm.. chip.

Took pole position on Taquitos Best Chips Ever Ranking.

Looking for a snack mule to smuggle some into Australia, past the forbidden food Nazis in customs. I pay top dollar.
