I know in america its the norm, but how much do you give? I went out yesterday for a meal with some of the lads, and the bill come to £236 odd. I collected money off everyone then just gave the girl £250. Some of the boys were like "fuckin hell how much?".

I didn't really think it was that much, seeing as we'd been a little rowdy an she'd been pretty good with us. Am i right,or should i have just give her nothing?

How much do you tip?

About an inch - inch-and-a-half if I've been taking my pills.

I was thinking about this when I was having my hair cut this morning.

How much should you give the hairdresser?

In case breast size is relevant, they are hyooge

I'd say that was about right - I usually work on 5% of the bill - but you should only give staff tips in cash - cos otherwise its lumped together with their wages and then they have to pay tax on it.

If I'm out for a meal, I'll usually leave 10%. However, if the service has been truly appaling I won't tip.

A group of us went to a Chinese years ago and the service was terribly slow and when we were served, the waitress could hardly speak English and just put the dishes down randomly without explaining what they were.

When we refused to pay a tip, the management were going to call the police. We invited them to do so, mentioning that we were doing nothing wrong as we had paid our food bill and that they would be wasting police time. They let us go and told us that we wouldn't be welcome if we didn't tip next time. We never went there again so it wasn't an issue for us. Shame, as the food was generally quite good.

Isn't the usual percentage 15% in America?

That sounds about right, Steve. When I was living in the UK I always got great service from places where I was a repeat customer because people remembered the tips I leave.

At pubs and bars, I leave about a pound for a drink.. I dunno it's probably too much, but then I get good conversation, good service and quick response.

In the US 15% is supposed to be "polite". There's always controversy over whether or not servers need to earn their tip, because some small dicked people need to be the king of america for 45 minutes.

In the US there is a server's minimum wage which is lower than regular minimum wage. It's somewhere around 2 dollars and 15 cents an hour (at least it was a couple years ago). Tips are supposed to make up (and hopefully exheed) the difference between the servers minimum wage and regular minimum wage... if they don't then the employers are supposed to make up the difference. If they have to do that too many shifts the servers get FIZZIRED. Maybe it's their fault.. I just know that I prefer not to be a cunt about it and give them a nice tip unless they were horrid.

I think unless you've got really really shitty service 15% is minimum. I normally still tip for shitty service, but something like 5%.

My normal tips are like 25% at places where I don't go regularly. At my local I wind up tiping about 30-40%.

Also, if the bill's quite small like under 10-15 dollars I'll tip a flat cash amount not a percentage, because it takes just as much effort to take out a 5 dollar plate of food as a 25 dollar plate of food. So I feel cheap leaving 75 cents to a dollar if i've got a small bill. So I normally leave like 3-5 depending on how big the bill is and how good the server is. 50% tip on a 3 dollar plate of french fries isn't that big of a deal out of my pocket and it makes someone's day

I ALSO GET LOTS OF FREE DRINKS BECAUSE I AM A GOOD TIPPER. I like the karma as well

Musta been in Amerian an hour, went for food.... The waitress keeps going on about how cool we sounded, and we're thinking "eh up , who wants a big tip then"...particularly our Harmonica player ( who's from Portsmouth or Southampton, somewhere down the bottom end)...so when she comes back he says "so do I sound sexy too"....."No way honey, you sound gay" ROFLMAO.. Blinding way to get 3 great tips and one very very poor one :D

We are not great tippers here in NI....9 times out of ten the taxi driver gets what he asked for and nothing more (but any special circumstances during the ourney will usually warrant an extra quid or two), we do tip in food emporia though.

my point is who can keep track of this shit? i certainly can't do simple multiplication in my head, even on an empty stomach. i'm mathmatically impaired. hence the simple tax-x2 rule applies no matter which state lines I cross to avoid apprehension (of all sorts, especially mental).

You've got to remember half of the restaurants in this country add service to the bill - in very very small writing - so 5% cash to a waitress is far better than the 12.5% hidden on the bill.

Should have said; these hidden tips are divided between the staff - some of whom are probably crap - and taxed on it - and the management take a cut............shit system. In smaller writing still, it says that you have the right to refuse to pay the tip - unless you are a table of 8 or over, then it is mandatory - what a load of crap. Dispute it. These kids (more often than not get no more than £5.05 an hour - to put up with people like.....................us?)

unless the service was really good, we generally don't tip here.

I usually round up the bill to the nearest fiver below £50 or 10% if the bill comes to more than this amount. But only in my local restaurants, or anywhere else where the service has been good. If the service is poor I usually tell them & complain. The wife gets embarassed, but the way I see it is if I spent £50 on a product and it was defective or doesnt do what it says on the tin, then they either owe me an apology or can give me a refund. Shop assistants who make a collection pot out of an old container with the words 'Staff Tips' scribbled on it, in my view are just cheeky begging fuckers who should get better jobs if they cant make ends meet on what they currently earn.

10% for me, more if I get good service (which rarely happens to my standards). I was a headwaiter for 2 years and made a killing. Made 2,500 a month for 20 hours of work (back in 95-97).....but it can be really stressful work. Most watiters/waitresses only last about 60 days before quiting or being canned. (plus California gives the waiters the State minimum wage, not a reduced one like CM talked about, as in other states)

I don't tip anybody. The way I figure it, people are paid to do a job and that's it. I don't get tipped for the work I do. Do any of you?

15 to 20%, unless the service sucks, and then it would almost certainly be negligible.

Why is it that we tip some professions and not others?

I usually hear people say that they tip those on the minimum wage, but there are plenty of jobs where you get minimum wage but if you asked for a tip you'd get told to fuck off.

Is it the same in every country?

I guess in the UK it's most common to tip waiters and waitresses, bar staff, taxi drivers and hairdresser.

In some countries, like France, it's included in the bill automatically.

In the main, I'd probably agree with you there. However, that's really down to the management isn't it? I've found the 'family friendly' pubs/restaurants are fine - they do tend to employ older staff though - but the trendy places, which obviously I frequent on a regular basis - some of the staff are rude, obnoxious and useless. If you ask for anything on the menu with 'extra this' or 'without that' it throws them into a complete daze.......they come back and say 'Chef said.......blah blah blah'............sack the Chef then. It's not called a service industry for nothing. However, back on topic, the wages are crap and if the food is good, and the service is good, they deserve a tip. If it's not, then I usually give them a tip anyway, usually along the lines of 'find a different job'.

Disagree. You wouldn't tip your waiter if they gave really bad service, but the table next to you had great service from a different member of staff surely? And as for the rest of the staff, well generally the Manager walks around but runs at the sight of a complaint and asks you to write to Head Office and offers a £5 voucher - pah - these kids rely on tips, and so individually they will offer a better service knowing that; in theory; and as for the Chef, he probably just dushes and dings anyway, for a lot of money.

In Austin, even the fast food workers expect tips. I see tip jars at the drive through windows everywhere. I like to go out with my wealthy in-laws. My brother-in-law always tips 50-100% and he gets LOADS of free drinks. His bar bill is usually around $200, without the free stuff. He always insists on paying when we all go out..... FREE BOOZE!

You're right Kath. At least where I worked that's why there was such a high turnover rate of waiters. It is a very stressful job. People treat you like crap, almost like a slave. They expect you to do sumersaults, backflips and crap just because they are going to give you $1.50 tip. Once you get a handle on the job than people treat you nice, but it really is hard to start out on that job. Plus remember that you aren't the only table. They might be doing four or five tables that all want your service NOW, but want you gone when they don't need you. Plus many resturants have the waiters make the drinks, salads, prep the food, and take it out. Doesn't seem like much, but the galley is usually small and everyone is fighting for space back there.

However, if you do get the rude waiter (I know this works in America, maybe not other places). But while you are finishing your food, find the manager or ask for him. They are liable to give you a complimentary dinner or something.

That's the rule in Brazil too. A service charge of 10% is automatically added to the bill.

I don't tip anybody. The way I figure it, people are paid to do a job and that's it. I don't get tipped for the work I do. Do any of you?

the tip is part of their salary.

In some countries, like France, it's included in the bill automatically.

A tip isn't part of the salary in the UK, think it's just an extra perk.

I always tip in a restaurant unless the service is really bad, I once asked to have the service removed as the waitress (in London) couldn't speak ANY English and brought the wrong food!

As Minx said, not sure why we tip certain professions?? E.g. why hairdressers and taxi drivers?? It isn't like they don't charge enough already!

definely at least 15 percent, but everything depends of the quality of the service... if the service is excellent I tip to 30 percent. I was working in America in the yellowstone Park as server for two seasons, and my wage depended on the tips. all the countries think different about this, for example from, Italy, Germany and France were very tight...sometimes they don't tip and it is not right. So from that moment I got used to tip always.

Yeah, why certain professions.

Fail all your exams and end up slopping swill out, or robbing women blind for a cut and blow dry....and you get a tip.

However.... hours of scraping round in the dirt, applying my wisdom and problem solving powers to provide a quality night's entertainment.......and not ONCE has any cunt come over and tucked a fiver under me soundboard.

Have you ever considered it might be because you're not very good? :p

Fixed salary of some professions is small due to the exact reason of having tips as an extra income.

back in my much younger days, I worked as a "courtesy clerk" for Safeway...I made a whopping $3.15 per hour, and I got much more than that in my tips...now days, at most grocers, they won't even carry your shit out to the car for you...

My roomie, Marcus, who is 10 years younger than me, also worked at a grocers as his first job. Doing the same thing. By the time he was doing it, they weren't allowed to take tips...

Of course, on the rare occasion that I actually help someone take something to their car at work now, they always want to tip me...of course, maybe most people aren't used to having managers act like carry out boys...

I'm just saying the 'lowly' in the case of restaurants, the waitresses; in the case of hair salons 'the juniors' etc; get absolutely appalling wages...........if they are good, they deserve a tip. Restaurants can charge a fortune - the Head Chef is often carried by junior chefs; at the Salon the senior stylist cant do their job without the juniors........but when you tip, the juniors either dont see anything of it, or they get a pittance from it. Usually they are on the minimum wage........

Case in point; my daughters best friend has stupidly decided to train as a Chef;' she goes to college one day a week, and in a 4* hotel for the rest of the time. She has ended up the most awful shifts, the worst jobs, I dont call that training. Today as an example, she was told to clean the Exec Chefs office; this hotel (I know cos I worked there) charge extortionate prices for reheated/constituted food. What the hell is she going to learn? How to set the timer on the ovens or dinging? She gets shouted at, gets things thrown at her.........yeah, great. THATS why these kids deserve tips.

USUALLY AROUND 2 BUCKS...TIP OF THE DAY: DON'T STRESS YERSELF OUT WITH STUPID ARGUMENTS THAT THE OTHER PERSON CAN'T WIN OR EVEN COMPREHEND.JUST LET IT GO.

Here in Greece, the tip was arounf 100 drachmas (before 2002 - approximately 0,30 euro or 0,25 US$ !!!). Now with Euro, the tips are from 1 to 2 euro at least. In night clubs, the tip could be even 20 euro sometimes, but not for me. I get drunk but not stupid.

:hi: I can feel a quote from RESERVOIR DOGS coming on. "Show a little green for the l'il lady" "I don't tip"

I usually give about £2/£3 for a meal or just round it up to nearest five or ten quid.Drinks usually they'll take 20-50 pence. Took Julie up Beetham Tower in Manchester before Christmas. The new Hilton Hotel that's the tallest in manc.Fantastic view of the city, with a smart glass portal built into the floor so you can look down on the street. They were serving all Manc. related cocktails ,so I had to have an ATMOSPHERE and Julie had a SALLY CINNAMON.Nice enough drinks £7.50 a pop though, but fuck it we can say we've been there.Give waiter £20 and said err.."And your own mate" Cnut kept the fiver. He came back and said" How were your drinks?" I smiled at him and said "STEEP"

many establishments have tip pools so tipping less than 15% may actually cost your service provider money. if you can't afford it makie your own drink, boil your own lobster, or buy some clippers.

I agree with you...

But what I don't get is why it is only some of the many people who work hard for a minimum wage get tips????

(ok so if you don't work directly for the public then you can't get tips as an office clerk or a factory worker...)

But think of all the poor buggers who work in retail for example, or nursing staff or teaching assistants etc all low payed jobs but I don't know of any who have been given tips.

I'm just curious as to why some professions get tips and others don't...

I'm also curious to know if the same professions get tips in all countries or if there is a cultural difference?

yep same for me Liam, i sometimes give them verbal tips "like don,t eat yellow snow".:)

Never buy tights for a mermaid :nono:

Liam and the words Think is nice associated to the same lines. What's happen-ed.

Tights for the Mermaid. WFTSirens' call.. Tipping. Take- away Korean or Japanese doesn't req. much service. If at a Sushi Bar how difficult is it for the Staff to keep the Tea or Saki topped and hot. The restaurant's view and Service is generally already reflected in the price. Bringing the bill up w/ tips or left at the table think is just basic courtesy.

Having said that. Worked a few nights for a friend years back while he wanted to go away for a three day weekend-end. Not sure why other staff, not sure how it happened. A hoot to be sure. The straight up cash tips by the end of each night did equal a big bonus. If it's the job you're holding, the tips might make a big difference.

I usually tip a dollar or two on a drink and 20 percent of the bill for good service. Good tipping at the bar almost always pays off the next time around.
