I know in america its the norm,but how much do you give? I went out yesterday for a meal with some of the lads,and the bill come to £236 odd. I collected money off everyone then just gave the girl £250. Some of the boys were like "fuckin hell how much?".
I didn't really think it was that much,seeing as we'd been a little rowdy an she'd been pretty good with us. Am i right,or should i have just give her nothing?
I was thinking about this when I was having my hair cut this morning.

I'd say that was about right - I usually work on 5% of the bill - but you should only give staff tips in cash - cos otherwise its lumped together with their wages and then they have to pay tax on it. 
If I'm out for a meal, I'll usually leave 10%. However, if the service has been truly appaling I won't tip.
A group of us went to a Chinese years ago and the service was terribly slow and when we were served, the waitress could hardly speak English and just put the dishes down randomly without explaining what they were.
When we refused to pay a tip, the management were going to call the police. We invited them to do so, mentioning that we were doing nothing wrong as we had paid our food bill and that they would be wasting police time. They let us go and told us that we wouldn't be welcome if we didn't tip next time. We never went there again so it wasn't an issue for us. Shame, as the food was generally quite good.

That sounds about right, Steve. When I was living in the UK I always got great service from places where I was a repeat customer because people remembered the tips I leave.
At pubs and bars, I leave about a pound for a drink.. I dunno it's probably too much, but then I get good conversation, good service and quick response.
In the US 15% is supposed to be "polite". There's always controversy over whether or not servers need to earn their tip, because some small dicked people need to be the king of america for 45 minutes.
In the US there is a server's minimum wage which is lower than regular minimum wage. It's somewhere around 2 dollars and 15 cents an hour (at least it was a couple years ago). Tips are supposed to make up (and hopefully exheed) the difference between the servers minimum wage and regular minimum wage... if they don't then the employers are supposed to make up the difference. If they have to do that too many shifts the servers get FIZZIRED. Maybe it's their fault.. I just know that I prefer not to be a cunt about it and give them a nice tip unless they were horrid.
I think unless you've got really really shitty service 15% is minimum. I normally still tip for shitty service, but something like 5%.
My normal tips are like 25% at places where I don't go regularly. At my local I wind up tiping about 30-40%.
Also, if the bill's quite small like under 10-15 dollars I'll tip a flat cash amount not a percentage, because it takes just as much effort to take out a 5 dollar plate of food as a 25 dollar plate of food. So I feel cheap leaving 75 cents to a dollar if i've got a small bill. So I normally leave like 3-5 depending on how big the bill is and how good the server is. 50% tip on a 3 dollar plate of french fries isn't that big of a deal out of my pocket and it makes someone's day
I ALSO GET LOTS OF FREE DRINKS BECAUSE I AM A GOOD TIPPER. I like the karma as well
I'm a good tipper, particularly in Greece, it opens doors and gets extra drinks and things provided!

Musta been in Amerian an hour, went for food.... The waitress keeps going on about how cool we sounded, and we're thinking "eh up , who wants a big tip then"...particularly our Harmonica player ( who's from Portsmouth or Southampton, somewhere down the bottom end)...so when she comes back he says "so do I sound sexy too"....."No way honey, you sound gay" ROFLMAO.. Blinding way to get 3 great tips and one very very poor one :D
We are not great tippers here in NI....9 times out of ten the taxi driver gets what he asked for and nothing more (but any special circumstances during the ourney will usually warrant an extra quid or two), we do tip in food emporia though.

You've got to remember half of the restaurants in this country add service to the bill - in very very small writing - so 5% cash to a waitress is far better than the 12.5% hidden on the bill.
Should have said; these hidden tips are divided between the staff - some of whom are probably crap - and taxed on it - and the management take a cut............shit system. In smaller writing still, it says that you have the right to refuse to pay the tip - unless you are a table of 8 or over, then it is mandatory - what a load of crap. Dispute it. These kids (more often than not get no more than £5.05 an hour - to put up with people like.....................us?)

That's what they rely on.
I usually round up the bill to the nearest fiver below £50 or 10% if the bill comes to more than this amount. But only in my local restaurants, or anywhere else where the service has been good. If the service is poor I usually tell them & complain. The wife gets embarassed, but the way I see it is if I spent £50 on a product and it was defective or doesnt do what it says on the tin, then they either owe me an apology or can give me a refund. Shop assistants who make a collection pot out of an old container with the words 'Staff Tips' scribbled on it, in my view are just cheeky begging fuckers who should get better jobs if they cant make ends meet on what they currently earn.

10% for me, more if I get good service (which rarely happens to my standards). I was a headwaiter for 2 years and made a killing. Made 2,500 a month for 20 hours of work (back in 95-97).....but it can be really stressful work. Most watiters/waitresses only last about 60 days before quiting or being canned. (plus California gives the waiters the State minimum wage, not a reduced one like CM talked about, as in other states)
