Only in a first class restaurant would I tip 20%. If I eat in a sports bar, I would tip a couple of bucks.

15 to 20%, unless the service sucks, and then it would almost certainly be negligible.

Why is it that we tip some professions and not others?

I usually hear people say that they tip those on the minimum wage, but there are plenty of jobs where you get minimum wage but if you asked for a tip you'd get told to fuck off.

Is it the same in every country?

I guess in the UK it's most common to tip waiters and waitresses, bar staff, taxi drivers and hairdresser.

I'm a ridiculous tipper, however, and even weigh in over the odds when there's a service charge already included so that I don't look like a tight cnut!

I have failed to mention that it was a family run gaff,so she'd already had the other £236...

I rarely go to places where i have to tip. Usually just whack in a quid or two

I've never come across anyone in this country that deserves a tip.there has never been any training inthe service industry in the UK,which is probably why those that work in shops,restaurants etc,are so fucking rude

In the main, I'd probably agree with you there. However, that's really down to the management isn't it? I've found the 'family friendly' pubs/restaurants are fine - they do tend to employ older staff though - but the trendy places, which obviously I frequent on a regular basis - some of the staff are rude, obnoxious and useless. If you ask for anything on the menu with 'extra this' or 'without that' it throws them into a complete daze.......they come back and say 'Chef said.......blah blah blah'............sack the Chef then. It's not called a service industry for nothing. However, back on topic, the wages are crap and if the food is good, and the service is good, they deserve a tip. If it's not, then I usually give them a tip anyway, usually along the lines of 'find a different job'.

Disagree. You wouldn't tip your waiter if they gave really bad service, but the table next to you had great service from a different member of staff surely? And as for the rest of the staff, well generally the Manager walks around but runs at the sight of a complaint and asks you to write to Head Office and offers a £5 voucher - pah - these kids rely on tips, and so individually they will offer a better service knowing that; in theory; and as for the Chef, he probably just dushes and dings anyway, for a lot of money.

In Austin, even the fast food workers expect tips. I see tip jars at the drive through windows everywhere. I like to go out with my wealthy in-laws. My brother-in-law always tips 50-100% and he gets LOADS of free drinks. His bar bill is usually around $200, without the free stuff. He always insists on paying when we all go out..... FREE BOOZE!

You're right Kath. At least where I worked that's why there was such a high turnover rate of waiters. It is a very stressful job. People treat you like crap, almost like a slave. They expect you to do sumersaults, backflips and crap just because they are going to give you $1.50 tip. Once you get a handle on the job than people treat you nice, but it really is hard to start out on that job. Plus remember that you aren't the only table. They might be doing four or five tables that all want your service NOW, but want you gone when they don't need you. Plus many resturants have the waiters make the drinks, salads, prep the food, and take it out. Doesn't seem like much, but the galley is usually small and everyone is fighting for space back there.

However, if you do get the rude waiter (I know this works in America, maybe not other places). But while you are finishing your food, find the manager or ask for him. They are liable to give you a complimentary dinner or something.
