- KT Tunstall's Mercury Prize nominated album Eye To The Telescope was originally going to be a concept album regarding the life and times of Galileo Galilee. However, Relentless record bosses convinced her that it wasn't such a good idea, and hadn't she written anything a bit more accessible? In a fit of pique she smashed down the dividing wall in her hotel room, and discovered a hidden wall covered in lyrics and musical annotations, previously left there by Joan Jett and Bernard Sumner. This became the basis for her album; however she insisted upon keeping the original title, as dedication to the tireless work of the 16th/17th Century astonomer.
Since being lent a copy of Unknown Pleasures by Matt Dillon in late 2004, the actor Frankie Muniz has become obsessed with trying to prove to everyone he meets that he knows more about Joy Division than they do. He trapped the writer and broadcaster Paul Morley in conference room in Miami for six hours earlier this year in order to get him to watch a PowerPoint presentation about how Peter Hook is superior to Flea, Bernard Edwards and Flea and Bernard Edwards put together. Morley was only able to escape after repeatedly striking Muniz between the eyes with a tea tray. Later that week Muniz would be thrown from a second-floor balcony by Racing Stripes co-star Mandy Moore after choosing to open a press conference by declaring that "The Correct Use Of Soap is for shit."
Spandau Ballet actually began as a four-piece outfit minus Tony Hadley. They were known as The Kemps and played Phil Spector-influenced '60s-style pop in small clubs in Utrecht. They only decided to change musical direction after seeing the glam-rock Japan on German TV in 1979 and listening to a copy of Joy Division's Unknown Pleasures Gary Kemp picked up from an outdoor music stall. They were inspired to move back to London, where they met Hadley at a Curtis Mayfield concert and subsequently formed the "classic" Spandau Ballet lineup.
Joy Division took their name from 1920's surreallist/dadaist Joi de Vision.
