Just about to have AVG freeware expire, can anyone recommend another decent freeware programme? Avast? Cheers.

AVG expires?! News to me, my free version has run for donkeys with no indication it'll ever shut down...

Have you tried just installing the latest 7.5 version?

Isn't only older versions of AVG that are having the updates withdrawn? The current version (7.5) is still works as before for free.

But to answer the question, I often see people recommending Avast! on PC forums, although I haven't actually used it myself.

Haven't heard that much about Avast! Will check it out.

I used to be a dedicated McAfee user but I found the last few versions to be very bloated and took up far too many system resources. Towards the end the McAfee Firewall EXE would randomly spike my CPU at 100% disrupting anything I was doing for a couple of seconds. Reinstalling didn't make any difference...

Switched over to AVG Free + ZoneAlarm Free middle of last year and never looked back, it's all your average home user will ever need

I've not got one.

Why do you need them?

For surfing porn I think Col.

Avg still has a free version, but it's got a retarded scheduler, so I hacked the fucker with a serial, 30 feckin quid ust so I don't have to choose between no automatic system scans and one every day.

Of course my other machine doesn;t need one, the only virus I fear in linux will arrive by email saying

"please log in as root and delete some important files, then send this to your friends"

Well I've been am enthusiastic porn-surfer for years and I've never caught anything.

I booked some tickets with JAT just before christmas and the email address I used has been flooded with spam.

Some cnut has used my address to send spam too, so I get about a hundred failure messages a day.

Bastards :computer2:

Some isp's give you an option to not receive those Delivery Status Notifications...

And you should be able to configurate your e-mail program to delete any mail that doesn't have your EXACT e-mail address (most spam generates a random name before the @ in the address) before downloading it from the server so that it no longer bothers you.

Er Steve, there's definitely an option to disable daily scanning in the AVG Free software setup. Plus I'm pretty sure you can disable it from inside the scheduler window as well once it's installed.

I put AVG on my spare PC and it started scanning automatically each day but that was knocked on the head pretty swiftly as it is bloody irritating, not to mention overzealous.

Norton is shite.

This is a bit off topic but......

My Outlook Express is fucked. I never use it anyway. But when I hit "contact" on sites where it takes you straight to Outlook, 64 (always 64) blank boxes rapidly pop up on my screen and i need to close the whole group down. It's a pain in the tits because there's some sites that this is the only way of getting the contact details of who I'm trying to speak to.

Also, when I'm at my Users Screen (I have two users set up on this PC) under my name it says I have like 439 unrtead messages yet when I open up Outlook there's nowt. Is someone sending emails via my PC? Happened to my partner who's server was hijacked for that purpose.

Grahame, try downloading and installing TweakUI.

After install, run it and choose Repair at the bottom of the list on the left hand side. From a pull down menu you can choose to repair the user screen mail count back to zero. Sometimes the count can get a bit fooked and stall at a certain number.

Your other problem sounds a bit like a virus or summit similar...

Oh, I know you can kill it, it's just it only offers daily or fuck all. My machine has so many files if I let it scan daily I'd get about 4 hours use out of it :D

I needed it to scan once a week.

Anyone use Norman anti virus with it's sandbox technology, whatever that is,a friend of mine says it's excellent..

Best anti-virus is to use your judgment, and don't let anybody else than you touch your computer.

I never used an anti-virus, those softwares are just done to slow computers.

When I am in doubt, there is some free one you can use online... otherwise, don't run or install everything on your computer...

i guess that's why there have been those mass spammings to all people on the NOOL member list from someone purporting to be Nic.
