No, Chrissy, David Beckham (although Beckham was briefly mistaken as the saviour by certain demographics at intermittent junctures between 1996-2002).

I think this move just about sums Beckham up. Signing for an MLS side while he's still relatively young in footballing terms says it all about his total lack of ambition in the game. He's interested in pursuing Beckham the brand and fuck all else. And to think you English mugs hailed him as the Messiah for so many years ![]()
Contrast him with someone like Henrik Larsson who at 35 is still pushing himself and taking on challenges that many with a bigger ego would shy away from.
Beckham....WHAT A TWAT ![]()
The media may have hailed him the Messiah Glas. I don't know anyone who said he was that great a player. A good player only, with a class free kick, but never in Stuart Ripley's class as a right sided midfielder.
You can imagine how he looks to a non football type like me. I hear about him oever and over again, how he is the greatest thing since a considerable time before sliced bread.
Then I turn the W/C ( or euro somethong or other ) on and witness a big. limp twat.

Per second surely
472k/7/24/60=46 quid some-odds a minute.
And I though Schumacher was overpaid, at least he COULD have got hurt.
well there goes my dads dream of him signing for preston north end.
aye pops theyll get him a house on the larches.![]()
On the radio (it was the news of the day in sports radios), they said 10M$ a year, so 5M pounds.
for 5 years. The rest is what the team is paying Madrid I suppose.
But he has 100% of his branding rights... while he had 50% with the Real.
Anyways, don't be that fast to judge it, the MLS is trying to make a stand they are serious... I don't know if that's suitable just yet though, to be honest, that's more than any players of the NHL, but half of some of the MLB players...
So it's middle ground.
Soccer is getting more popular in the US, and they are trying something... will it work, no idea yet... but it can only be good for worldwide soccer fans.
Maybe Mr Beckham will enjoy being able to walk in the streets without being recognized ;) I mean, sure there are lot of paparazzis in LA, but they are all over Paris Hilton :p
mike powell wrote: well there goes my dads dream of him signing for preston north end. aye pops theyll get him a house on the larches.
He's already played for PNE.![]()
lovely, the news makes even the local TV broadcast as well, and I just heard it on the national ABC telecast (they told their viewers to head to their website to see what makes Beckham so "special") ![]()
Jeffari-al-Texani wrote: so can we get Henrik Larsson over as well???
King Henrik has too much ambition and self respect to jump on the MLS gravy train. Plus there's a certain team down Manc way who now seem to be trying to secure his services til beyond his 36th birthday. Beckham aint even a tenth of the pro that Larsson is.
To think Beckham will get more wages in one week than George Best earned from his entire career in the game..
I would'nt be too surprised if a few heads were turned in the Premiership now the salary cap in the US is lifted and you get some of the better players in their prime going over to the U.S. for the dosh now..Beckham's astronomical wages appeal, may open the floodgates for others that want to make a difference to the kids over there ![]()
Wayne Rooney has already been over here, starring in Shrek and all...
But seriously, do you think the MLS owners will go around throwing their cash at the rest of Europe's footballers? Who else has Becks name recognition? Erm...that's right, over here...NOBODY...it's a gimmick signing...meant to sell more merchandise, and stick a few more asses in seats...well...maybe a lot more...but still...
MLS is still a Mickey Mouse league...the Galaxy are the ONLY team in MLS to EVER turn a profit, and I'm thinking that just got flushed down the shitter...This league has looked for somebody to be the poster boy, Freddy Adu was gonna be the golden child when he entered the league at some age between 14 and 41 (depends on which of his birth certificates you look at)...now it's going to be Becks...I've read that this will make the rest of the world take notice of MLS, but I ain't so sure that's the case...he isn't capped for England any longer...he wasn't regularly featured for Real Madrid...so why would anyone really give a shit if he's going to come play in LA???
It's not gonna make me start watching any more MLS mathces...because even with Becks, it's still a rubbish league...
I know all that Jeff. I'm talking about a possible snowball effect the Poster Boy may have..MLS will be on Sky TV over here next year without a shadow of a doubt.Beckham still has the midus touch and will remain Front page news over here for a few years yet, regardless of him being a squeaky voiced doyle IMO Look at the money involved, our media love this shit...Not saying it will happen, just a thought some of the Prems top players get to thinking..All depends on the interest generated in MLS by this move,I know..But if it's as successful as this gamble is trying to be,it could open the floodgates..Then again you all like rounders better just now.

Not a good advert for the Beautiful Game though, unless you're a face-painting happy clappy tw&t.
Considering that his less fashionable peers Scholes, Giggs (actually, no, he's probably no less fashionable, just never bigged himself up like Brand Beckham (or his Mrs?) did) and Neville are all still doing it at the very highest levels, whereas Beckham himself hasn't even won (I believe) a single trophy in 4 years now and you begin to wonder about his true worth..
Be interesting to see how it pans out for him, mind.. .
Beckham?

If Football lifts off over there, which it probably won't because as we all know Beckham is trading on his image now rather than football brilliance that he never really had to begin with..I don't think he can sustain that for too long. But the figures the yanks throw about will turn the heads of the Cashley Coles back home if it does somehow lift off we could have an exedus, much like the best Dutch players fuck off to the rich leagues, I think greed would come into the game even more..What would they compete in though in America? The Totally Awesome Dude Cup! It would be very shite for our game Al.Let's hope it all goes tits up.

Taking off the tinted glasses. He was good, could have been great, had he not crippled himself trying to break someone else's leg.
Never said he was great, never said he fulfilled his potential.Never indicated anything about the dickhead's character.I said he was quality at footy, proper! ![]()
You arnt going to send me that clobber now are you?(Calzaghe Norton V Ali DVD's etc, remember??)just coz I said Gazza was proper beaut at footy ![]()
Just goes to show how things have to be bigger and better in the US. Victoria might actually be a star in a couple of years, after all a WAG isn't a profession...
This does not surprise me at all. The MLS owners had approved that one player could be exempted from their strict and very low salary cap. It was even called "The Beckham Rule"!!
They have basically a nice minor league, in terms of attention, in The States. Becks is overrated but The MLS types see the media blitz. Do you think any other player would get the big headlines he does??
so The Becks and Posh Dog & Pony show will do LA. Celebrity and chav heaven.
Every now and then, American sports get owners who think they are being visionary by throwing far more money at players than they are worth. The owner of the Galaxy (and most of MLS) Philip Anschutz is worth gazillions, so he probably thinks it all makes sense thru marketing and co-branding and t.v. money, and that people all over the country will suddenly forget about baseball and start watching soccer. If Pele couldn't make soccer a huge sport in the US (and he and the Cosmos were astoundingly popular) than no way Beckham will. Soccer's popular enough here, but I think MLS screwed up when DC United was the dominant team (with John Harkes and a bunch of still-decent stars) and than split them up to create parity in the league - you need one great organization to get people to care about a league - look at the Yankees and the Tokyo Giants in baseball, the NZ All-Blacks in rugby, the Celtics in bnasketball, Man. U. - MLS is just medicore throughout, and Beckham won't change that. The U.S.' lame showing the world cup didn't help either.
And who has the last laugh? Beckham. For an average Premiership footballer he's done incredibly well for himself. He may be as thick as pigshit but he knows when and how to listen to good advice. His missus and her advisers have got a lot to answer for!
Similar, but much lower standard, is how come Jade Goody is a millionaire? Which twats have bought into the gutter culture? We pay taxes for that thing to breathe!

I think he's more well liked in the US than Beckham.. and he doesn't look like a poofter more concerned with his hair so more people will respect him. He's also got a hard name.
Larsson for NY REDBULL!

soccer is for fags and girls in this country which is why it's not popular. Nothing to do with non-stop play and commercials--they got around that for bastketball and they would figure out at way for soccer too. People (white working class salt of the earth types) will not stop seeing soccer as a sport for fags and girls if some faggy english pretty boy comes over.
It'll be the same (ex) frat boys and high school girls in the stands that's there now.

As incredible as it might seem, it is lifting. Since the World Cup in the US, the young americans practice "soccer" a lot more, and the US national team is doing well.
I'm not saying it will get the same popularity as the other major sports in the US, I mean, baseball and american football have been there for so long, basketball as well, it will be difficult, but due to the massive invasion of new comers in the last years in North America, it's getting more and more popular.
Want a proof? In montreal we have a team of the 2nd division of the MLS (the A league), and the stadium is packed at each and every game, they are building a brand new stadium now... and believe me, there were more people in this packed stadium (still, it's only 10K people) than in average at the Expos (Major League Baseball) before they left the city!
And not to count how many people were in the streets after each game in the world cup....
You would have never seen that 10 years ago!
And we have the U20 tournament in Montreal this year...!
A mate at work reckons the team David Girlham has signed for, get 65,000 sellouts every game. Is this true? That's a shit load of face paint, and he's not even there yet..What sort of wages do the other lesser lights command in the MLS at present?Anyone know? I would have thought the top European leagues still pay more at this time,Beckham apart...whose wages at least triple the likes of Schevchenko,Ballack et al.

Gazzilions is right. Quoted as DBeckham getting not earning 1 million $US/ week.
Celtics and Larry Bird. Short by standards white Guy drew a passion..
DB was over house hunting months back so not sure how this Tsunamied like this. If it might mean the in a year or two he'll change his focus and get funds set + working towards youth and under 20s then hats off.
The Dutch players chasing the $ is down the ego clash. Of course KNVB too much talent, like Clockwork, and not enough room on the pitch. Of course.
A rather bitter, damning article about beckham in todays Telegraph said that the standard of 'soccer' that Becks will be playing in is akin to the English league 2 / conference. He will also be playing in the same league as Terry Cooke. Terry used to play for Man City when we were in the old english third division and we were crap....... Nice to see that the cream always rises to the top.......

Perversley that could work in team Becks's favour..If everyone is really THAT cack,Girlman will be baggin hatricks every week, even from the right sided birth....He's still probably good enough to play Premier League for one of the lesser rubbish clubs, like Newcastle over here.

Well, the idea of bringing Beckham is probably to raise the level of the league.
It's evident the best players are in Europe.
The lower league players here, would kick lumps out of Becks,he'd never sign for Whitby Town..MLS teams might struggle to stay up in the Northern League here, but are you allowed to tackle in the MLS? Any Chopper Harrises to meat out some naughty challenges? Bet the refs are strict and the player's kits are Jazzy..All the gear, but no idea![]()
latest rumor has Edgar Davids signing for 'FC Dallas" now how much is it going to take for them to lure Ronaldo to the states, he is less marketable than Becks but a superior player(in girth and skill)
I'm thinking how long before they lure Wayne and Colleen.
Will our best players play the prime of their careers in the boomin MSL? Who knows.
They can fuck off for all I care. They can bring gate prices back down to a reasonable level again, the kids will be able to go again, and watch the lads who actually give a shit about the club they play for.Like when I were a lad.Sorted.It was better then anyway.Geniuine players and fans. ![]()

not sure if this has been answered for you yet...but the place that the Galaxy plays at only seats around 27,000...and they already averaged around 25,000 in attendance, so thats a shitload of money to pay to stick 2000 more asses in seats....

Gibson is also anti-English so Beckham will have to have a different nationality.
Can't see what the fuss is about to be honest. Beckham was never going to cope with the pace of the Premier League again and would have faded from the limelight in whichever league he then chose, he's got his limelight and loads of cash to boot, good luck to him.
Every day I ask myself "why the hell do I know who David Beckham is?" ![]()
Because I don't want to, you see ![]()
Dont really know why he's getting slagged off myself. If someone offered you roughly £470,000 a WEEK to play football would you turn it down? Good luck to him i say,ok he might not be everyones cup of tea,but i can think of worse people for kids to look up to.
