That is major copyright violation and guess what, he'll probably get away with it.I still say the Finnish musician can find a way to be paid for it despite not having the money to take that fucker to court. That is sorry. Her music sounds like shit and the original sounds better anyway. I took a copyright law class in college and I believe there is something that can be done about this even though that guy has a lot of money from making crap music. Fuck Geffen. They release trash like Ashlee Simpson into the mainstream. This just agitates me....

I remember the first time this crap happened.....

Jan Hammer nicked some guys's conga playing for the Miami Vice theme, I was stunned, I could not comprehend why he would abuse his Fairlight this way, surely the point was to take a couple of conga hits and play your own groove.

Of course as time has gone on we've got used to what Fairlight and her children unleashed on us. But somehow rappers ALWAYS manage to take the piss, because they have no musical ability of their own, and all come from gangs (those who don't live in mansions)and think stealing is great.

I couldn;t give a shit about someone nicking someone else's teeny bits, but when you lift half a track or a whole one, and then make more money than the poor cunt who's work you're feeding off.....grrrrrrrrrrrr

DJ's are worse, they get paid £1000's for every £1 the artists get.

BTW, I heard a track I produced on TV a couple of weeks ago.....no cheques have appeared :(

yeah...but thats generally the whole damn song nearly that he ripped .don't know who those people are.just think people ought to quit thieving and come up with shit of their own instead of taking credit for someone else's work. :thumb:

Run sounds a bit like it.

So Denver's legal whores sued NO and forced them to credit Denver.

Mt all time favourite "rip offs" are.....

Back to life by soul to soul, which is really Smoke On the Water.

And With or without you by U2, which is the theme from the magic roundabout.

The one I never got, is who wrote the 1 3 5 6 7 walking bassline that every record from 1940 to 1970 seems to feature (and in the same Dominant forms, and always as a 12 bar turnaround)

I can't fathom how Run sounds in anyway like "Leaving on a Jet plane"

John Denver,Getta fuck! You wish! RIP

I reckon co-incidence, beacause they are both, ummmmm....how to put it?????????????/

They're both written very "correctly" using the "right" melody over the "right" chords.

What I mean is that they are both sort of "by the numbers"

Yeah, utter shite like the whole He's So Fine = My Sweet Lord case. Both songs use pretty generic melodies and they came to the conclusion of MSL being a rip-off by comparing sheet notes. Which was quite ignorant - most pop and rock songs are built on earlier used melodic ideas and chord progressions. However, compare the arrangements of the tunes and the ways they're performed and it's a different matter entirely. Same with Jetplane vs. Run, even though I have no idea how that case was settled.

Timbaland clearly ripped off Tempest here (and that's not just because I'm Finnish) - the backing track sounds like it's been directly sampled and then some other stuff has been added on top.

But as Rob Pavorkian already proved, they all rip off Pachelbel anyway:

It happens. A lot. Just listen to Rihanna's "SOS." If you don't hear Soft Cell's "Tainted Love" in it, you're deaf.

as a fan of blues guitar this happens all the time. Eric Clapton admitted that his licks on Cream's "Disraeli Gears" were lifted from the album "Born Under a Bad Sign" by Albert King.

Albert King later said of Stevie Ray Vaughan "That boy has a black daddy and I'm him"

just proves what I know-the talented ones "borrow" and the hacks just steal

I dunno.. music is cyclic. Sometimes influences are so ancient that I'm not sure artists are totally aware until its pointed out to them.

Poor example: I didnt have a clue that Kylie's 'Can't Get you out of my Head' was a rip off of Blue Monday, ti'l she kindly mashed them together at a live performance at the Brit awards. In this case I don't recall any royalties were paid because NO weren't aware of it until she kindly revealed her sources.

I think Jonathan King tried to claim "It's A Sin" was a ripoff of a Cat Stevens(AKA Yusef Islam)song called "Wild World". Think he was pretty much on his own as far as that was concerned.

Ermmm... it wasnt Johnathan King I'm sure.. But I'm not entirely happy with me suggesting it was George Harrison either. I'm sure some PSB fan will give us all the info, but it deffo hit the High Court.

I await a response from someone who knows. My memory is fucked

Of course Vanilla Ice didn't steal the bass line from "Under Pressure" for "Ice Ice Baby" :hat:

I'm on the fence about issues like this, because you have to remember that early rap consisted of taking old records and using them to create new songs entirely. Mostly because a lot of the early rappers lived in the projects and couldn't afford equipment. So there's an established legacy there. And if you can take an existing piece of work and redo it in an inventive way and force people to see it in a new way, more power to you

But theft can just be theft

so does this mean it is perfectly okay to download music from the internet without paying for it???

NOOOOO

you stealing a penny or two from a record company is a massive terrorist crime. A record company stealing a musician's work and liveleyhood.....that's fine :D

BTW, the BPI are doing a great "we can be just as evil as the RIAA" routine. They're putting out ads to say that their propose extension of copyright to some long time after the artist's death is a good thing for artists and their families.

Their ad completely leaves out that currently the artists and their families still GET money for that long, and that their proposal is in fact that the artists should get less, and the BPI should get some forever and ever.

Unbelievable.

No idea if that ever went to High Court or anything like that. I think It's A Sin and Wild World do have the same chord progression, but the notes in the vocal melodies are different. And that chord progression comes from the times of Bach (that baroque guy, not the creep from Skid Row) - therefore it's been in public domain for a long time. Hell, even NO used it in Subculture.

Seriously, you can sing the chorus on Run, it fits.

It's the same chord, but faster.

Probably a coincidence, all artists have influences around, it's bound to happen.

But to sue somebody over that... that's pushing it too far.

I mean, it's not Puff Daddy!

She put it on the b-side of her next single, so New Order got their share for that one.

That is so... hypocrit.

C'mon, we've been taping off the radio for years without nobody ever complaining.

People STILL buy the music they love... kids used to swap tapes, it's still going the same way.

Doubt she give Elton John anything for ripping off the "Hold me closer,Tiny Dancer" lyrics...

Oh I dunno, I don't think a lot of musicians back in the early days of rock 'n' roll were paid their fair share for anything they did, which was also the way it was done as reggae music developed in Jamaica in the 60's; artists were paid a fee once, and that was it.

I also seem to recall that a lot of the major record companies were paying artists reduced royalties when CD's were introduced, as they were a "developing" technology. No surprise really when the companies started pushing CD's; it took a threat of a lawsuit from artists such as Bruce Springsteen and Billy Joel to get things to where they were when vinyl was king.

No, I don't feel a ton of sympathy for the recording industry, but there is some for 'em, who knows how much money has been advanced to drugged out artists who spent the money everywhere but in the recording studio?

pretty much, the whole thing, drum n bass,melody-oh wow a few notes were dropped. just more melody was added on top. oh,well....i hated playing canon in d in orchestra...high school...so easy.coincidence does occur...but that wasn't coincidence..lol.

I've got nothing against people sampling or using influences from other people's songs to create something new and interesting music from them. However I don't like the basis of much modern day (c)Rap Music is just samplimg (ripping off) a well known pop tune with some crappy rapping and a R&B singer wailing all over it. F*** that crap I'd sooner listen to a 'cat's choir'. Cheers!:thumb:
