I got feckin slaughtered once in a pub on the main front called the King and Queen (appropriate for Brighton).
Can't suggest much else, although i wouldnt go into one of the delis there, asking for salami.
The Lanes are nice for a wander round - plenty of eating and drinking establishments to suit most tastes.
From a touristic point of view you've got The Pavillion, one and a half piers, nudist beach, Old Volks Railway along the front, the marina...
The Lanes have some lovely jewellery shops! It is her birthday after all.......
And the bar at either the Grand or the Metropole for special occasions.........
Other than that avoid alleyways. Alone.
