Can someone tell me what that actually means? I'm forever hearing it and being told it.Like ,we've all got loads more spare cash than we used to that we can dispose of on enjoying ourselves after the bills are paid? Yeah right!

I have no disposable income at all - the more it goes up . . . the more the interest rate does. My debt seems to go up far faster than my "disposable income." Mind you, given a choice, I'd dispose of my income on WINE!!!
Could that be a new thread. What would you dispose of your income on! LEGALLY of course . . ..

If someone gave me a load of money I would retire to a tropical island and relax disgracefully.
I'm lucky in that I have no debt I suppose, but then again no job pretty soon!

I think what they mean is that people have money after the necessities are purchased. If you look at the early 1900s, many of those in the U.S. (at least can't answer for other places), were spending simply to put food on the table, and mainly filler foods (lacking meat, healthy vegtables, etc.).
Although people are trapped by thier bills today, for the most part, they are self chosen. Necessity is food, , a roof over your head, and utilities (elec, nat gas, water). To own a car, gassing it up, insurance, eating at fast food, watching movies, cell phones, etc. is not seen as a necessity.

Bit like today really - with mortgage prices. When I retire at 65 (with no pension - can't afford a property and pension) I'll own my house but bog all else. On top of that, when you have a massive mortgage, you cant afford much else other that that and food. UK house prices have gone totally mad. Mind you, if I had disposable income, it would go on clothes, nights out and holidays (in london - scared of flying)

Actually accross the population it's probably true, but not for the sunny happy reasons the Govt would have you believe.
Truth seems to be that houses are now so expensive, that young folks simply cannot afford them, and therefor have a mortgage worth to piss up the wall each month.
And I think that people spending 200 quid on a night on the piss, pretty much says that we DO have more spare cash.

Maybe I have been rather fortunate, but my level of disposable income has gone up considerably the last couple of years, even after I bought a house. That's all changing soon though, as I shall have no income!

Reminds me of my Marines (though a different point then I think you were trying to make). I have to school them in finances all the time (scary though, eh?). They are always getting into financial trouble. Their usual expression is "Well I don't make that much money and I have so many bills".
Granted they make about $1100 a month. Doesn't sound like much right, but take into consideration that they don't pay for rent, utilities, uniform items, food (as long as they eat at the mess hall), cable, and there are all sorts of military discounts out there. Short of a cellphone, they have no bills to take care of, its $1100 take home.
Of course when they eat out at Carl's Jr. everyday for three meals, drink 3 - $2.00 energy drinks a day, get sloppy drunk at a bar three times a week, get a loan for a $60,000 vehicle (add the insurance for not being 25), of course they don't have any money. Its easy to not have enough due to poor money management.

Yes, but it isn't all due to bad management for everyone - as I said earlier, the uk housing market has gone mad. A house that cost £11 000 25 years ago is now worth at least £130 000. Of my income each month, well over half goes on mortgage alone for a very small one bedroomed apartment. Throw in bills, food and insurance and there is very little left. I resent people assuming first time buyers are wasteful when salaries are not increasing in line with inflation and interest rates go up way faster than salaries. 
I've managed to reach my mid 30's with no debts. Trouble is.....I've no credit rating either

Here, Edel....I hope y'all get more than that when yer in a combat zone, I make more than that! (notwithstanding the USMC taking care of most things for your lads). Don't you think soldiers, especially combat active ones, will have a predeliction for pissy finances, with a sort of nagging thought of "why save, why live within my means, when I might gett offed tomorrow"

Seriously, I'm trying to cut down on my alcohol intake anyway! Still have a bottle of wine in my fridge which is good for a monday night!!!

I would agree whole-heartedly but given my massive mortgage and hideous bills, I'll have to make do with Wilkinson's Turps!!!! Or even worse . . . . Bellabrusco. I guess you have to live in the north east of England to know quite how bad that is!!!
