Sonic Youth Perform "Daydream Nation", Glasgow 22/08/07

I've always been fascinated by these performing an album in it's enirety type sets that bands do. Never been to one though. I remember The Delgados did their entire back catalogue of albums over five consecutive nights at the ICA in London a few years ago but I was abroad so didn't get the chance to see any of it.

Looking forward to this though. If ever there was an album that lent itself perfectly to this type of gig then surely it's Daydream Nation? Starting off with "Teenage Riot" (the best opening track of any album EVER!), ending with "Trilogy" and all the classics in between. Should be pretty amazing.

Not seen them since the "Goo" tour in 1990 either. As far as I'm aware, this Glasgow show is their only UK date. Unless someone can correct me?

Nah, Sonic Youth will play three nights at Roadhouse in London too. A friend of mine is going to see them there.

If you Google it only the Glasgow date comes up. But yes, been on their site. The Glasgow date then the three nights in London and that seems to be your lot.

I'm quite excited about seeing em, would rather see them play a set of career songs but nevermind daydream nation is pretty cool.

So in what way are Sonic Youth relevant then? Because based on post in the other thread you seem to only allow yourslef to like music which is, i presume, relevant?

Don't know much about them, they are at Electric Picnic this year. Might go and see them if they don't clash with anyone I like.

Too many presumptions there. If I only liked music that was relevant to the "now" why would I be posting on a New Order forum? As our American cousins would say, "Do the math!".

Sonic Youth, and Daydream Nation in particular, are relevant to me on a nostalgic level. DN (along with Technique) is the album that soundtracked my last year at school and as such means something to me.

I also happen to think that, despite being almost 20 years old, Daydream Nation is more "relevant" to the evolution of popular music than anything produced by The Zutons, The Kaiser Chefs or Little Man Tate.

I would argue that their relevance is in the way their sound provided so much inspiration for all these bands nowadays who have tried to sound like them. The originators of the genre (I hate that word but you know what I mean) are always going to be relevant if they are a going concern. Makes sense to me anyway, even if nobody else will understand what I'm on about.

Bands like Little Man Tate, The Zutons, and Kaiser Chiefs are relevant to me on something which may seem strange but is called the "Fun" level. That means that its nice to listen to, put on good live shows which are entertaining and is basically all about having a good time.

Incidentally, the way you slagged off all the bads in that list i compiled implied that the bands were shit (in your misguided eyes) because they were "irrelevant." But then again, considering you havent heard of most of them, (and some of the ones you had heard of had been tagged lazily-"NME electro" for instance) its probably quite safe to say my 86 year old grandmother has more knowledge of contemporary culture and music than you do and that your opinion is so misguided and uneducated as to be totally worthless.

I'd agree with that. Don't forget they took Nirvana under their wing and got them signed to Geffen. Kurt always praised SY in interviews and wore their tshirts.

I only have Goo and Daydream Nation but I love both of them. Kim Gordon is cool as fuck and Thurstan Moore is the man.

Firstly, read Tim's post above yours. Put better than I could have put it myself.

Secondly, I'm not getting into a "I'm-into-cooler-bands-than-you-are" argument with you, I stopped that kind of behaviour in high school. Your "knowledge of contemporary culture and music" clearly extends to trolling Myspace looking for fourth rate indie bands or laughable "electro" (it cracks me up when you use that term, honestly it does) acts like, aherm, The Whip.

If your definition of "contemporary culture and music" is some dodgy indie ghetto populated by the likes of Little Man Tate then I think it's time you had a reality check.

As for my personal knowledge of "contemporary culture and music"? I have residencies at two of Glasgow's most "relevant" nightclubs (www.weareguru.com, www.karbonuk.com) playing to 1200 18-30 year olds week in week out. Every Tuesday night I play contemporary-as-it-gets Hip Hop and R&B to 700 punters in a night that I've been DJing at and promoting for 10 years. On a Saturday, I spin an indie set at a different club (also rammed) mixing up GOOD contemporary indie and a bunch of classics as well. Next Friday I'm doing a one-off supporting FC Kahuna.

So you see, there's too much cash at stake for me not to have a bang up to date knowledge of EVERYTHING that's rocking "the kids" world. My broad knoweldge of ALL contemporary musical styles is something that "indie-anoraks" like yourself could never touch.

I was at the second show last night. It was good, but not great. The problem with doing Daydream Nation from start to finish is that you need to open up with "Teenage Riot" then follow it up with "Silver Rocket" which aren't just the best two songs on DN but probably the best two songs in Sonic Youth's entire career. Kinda hard to keep the momentum going after playing those two floor shakers.

The band also looked misearble as fuck. Zero communication between each other or the audience and the only time they looked vaguely into it was when they were playing the new album at the end.

That said, when it comes to Kim Gordon you STILL most defineately would!!! Tiny white satin halterneck dress and NO BRA!!!! Perky chebs for a burd in her 40's.

Thats true they did have a heads down and get on with it attitude, still Lee Ranaldo seemed to be enjoying himself all the way through.

alot better than the smashing pumpkins gig the night after, a demonstration on how to bleed a 4min song dry by extending it to 15+ mins numerous times
