Thought this would have been about the Lou Reed album, which I bought the other day after reading a glowing review in a quality newspaper.

I thought the album was crap. Not deserving classic status. Sounded like someone on coke had made it after having huge success with their previous album then sacking anyone who critisised it.
I have no opinion on Berlin the city.
This thread is just getting going, so isn't crap yet.

great song. The album is a grower so i would give it time.
amazing place, been a few times now and its one of my favourite places, walked back to my hotel one night from a bar in the old east berlin, if you look up at the windows you can see bullet holes were there must have been snipers in the last days of the war, very spooky, as for bars, my fave is a place called "tachalles bar" and its on oranienburgerstrasse, there is a metro stop there and it used to be a department store but there is only the front wall, and the first set of rooms behind it, then the rest is missing, bombed in i think?, antway, out in the space were it used to be shop, is now a bar, and they do open air theatre,we saw a sword fight there last time i was there, and theres a bus sticking out of the ground
,the rooms that ocupy the remnants of the store are now galleries and work shops.
oranienburgerstrasse is the street were "crystalnacht"( the night of broken glass) started, thats when the nazis started the persicution of the jews in germany.
I`ve been 4 times. Discover new stuff every time, but one absolute must is the Checkpoint Charlie museum.
Last time (this March) we did a Trabant safari, a 90 min guided tour where you drive your own Trabant! That was a right laugh.

Been meaning to go to Berlin for some time now - one of these days I'll get round to it... Now, if New Order (unlikely!)/Monaco/Freebass/etc were to play a gig there...

And if i remember correctly, all (or most) of the shops close on a Sunday, so don't leave your shopping til then

Don't think so Stevie, unless Harrods has become a shopfront for sexworkers and pervs...mind you, that's what I read about it from a biography written by Christiane F, a former smackhead and prostitute...some of the German Order may correct me if the Ku'damm has been cleaned up a bit since that book was based sometime in the early '70s I think.

I used to drive a Trabant when a friend of mine was too drunk to drive home. Always been a good laugh indeed... ... but I never drove in Berlin.

Got to have a drink here! Fantastic city, the contrast between the history and destruction and the regeneration of much of the city (especially Potsdamer Platz) is really interesting... Some good museums to get a sense of the place - go to The Story Of Berlin - you can go on a tour of nuclear shelter, which is dead weird... The Checkpoint Charlie museum is also worth a visit... There are some good places to eat around the Hackischer Markt and both the TV tower and the Reichstag offer good views of the city...

Glad you started this thread. Got a stag do there in October for one of the Mackem Vikings.
Was gonna be late September but he picked the same weekend as the Berlin Marathon, so nish hotels available and flight prices were through the roof.
It could get very messy.. .
