Any Onliners play?
I recently got back into it after years of not playing. Broke my all-time best score by 4 shots after 2 dodgy rounds.
New PB is an 86 on a 6242 par 70 course.

No offence Hank but I think there's something strange about anyone under 50 either playing or being interested in golf. I always associate it with fat, Tory-voting Jimmy Tarbuck types. And it looks like a total cunt of a game to master!
I used to play a fair bit when I was a kid but scarcely since.
I let my junior membership lapse when I was a teenager (booze, girls, better things to do etc) then in my early 20s when I wanted to get back out on the course I found getting an adult membership nigh on impossible - not to mention pricey - so gave up altogether.
My local club has a five year waiting list or something ridiculous like that, you literally have to wait for the OAP players to die off before any "openings" appear.
For those reasons and a few more, I just don't like golf anymore. It's always seemed to be full of picky old wankers who are more concerned about whether you're a "member" than truly bringing fresh blood into the game. A notice on the local golf clubhouse saying "Strictly No Trainers Or Denim Beyond This Point" was the final nail in the coffin for me; surely there has to be more to life?
It's also a game that has a habit of taking young people and giving them all the mannerisms and attitudes of old men; hilarious but slightly depressing watching 18 year olds behave like they're 55.
Is it much different from the above in England?

Totally agree. A few aquaintances play. They're all of a certain type which I would describe as "old before their years".

oh god and schmoozers. People I know who are under 60 who've taken it up took it up to network or something.
:barf:
Love playing Tiger Woods on the 360, enjoy the odd 'real' game, i'd like to play more. But HATE watching it on tv?

None taken, I think it's very much a game of two halves. You've got all the nobs playing thousands a year on green fees at private clubs, then you've got the municiple side of it golf societies, who mostly seem to be cabbies and the retired.
Loads of normal lads play, Bootle golfy's about as far from Birkdale as you can imagine, though only about 10 miles as the crow flies. £9 a round, as opposed to £130. Kids on the course selling you balls from the lake, or ones they've robbed off you a few holes back.
You're right about it being difficult to master as well, though you occasionally hit a shot that gives you as much satisfaction as a wank.

Blame those who invented the damn game!![]()
Yes, I do drink. I guess most of us here do. The question is how many bottles of beer or shots of hard liquor can we take before we get... you know.
Ooops... i'm sorry. This thread is about the sport golf. I thought its about GULP! (As in gulping beer!)![]()
Indeed!

Kinell, reminded me why I rarely bother starting threads on here. If your not interested, you're not obliged to add a 'humourous' reply.

I used to play when I was a teenager (won the Junior Captains Day and the Halle Orchestra Cup). However, the dress code also stopped me playing. I remember going into a local shop after a game in a roll neck sweater and Pringle V-Neck sweater and the girl on the the till asking me if I was a smooththy or something?!
Our club had a list of about a 100 items you could not wear on the first tee. It included items such as combat jackets and trousers tucked into socks. You even had to wear a tie to get a drink in the bar!
Needless to say I haven't now played for over 20 years.
Its a fun game (and best with many beers), but a bit expensive for me to really get into. If I'm there, its alot of fun, but its not something I dream about when I'm not. If I had more money I'd plobably play alot more.
Never appealed to me. Much rather play rugby or smack the sh*te out of someone in a sparring session. I prefer the physical stuff than wandering round with a glorified walking stick ![]()

Just been for a knock around the course at Aintree, inside the Grand National course. Had on a t-shirt, a tracky top and a pair of shorts.
Cross-country snooker.
I've never played anything other that pitch and put when I should have been in school.
I used to keep a driver in the boot of my car, but I don't really feel the need any more.
Have a few beers with the lads and a couple of puffs is surely a better way to chill out? Or lazy sex on a Sunday afternoon (not with the lads) - you don't even have to get out of bed! ![]()
Awwww...c'mon...golf is a fine way to waste a few hours...
I ain't been able to play since I got to Austin...but there was a wee little course about 5 minutes from my house in Dallas...loverly...
and any of you that have met me know...I am not highbrow!!!
i have been playing golf for 17 years on and off,me handicap is 6,off this weekend for a few games down at Newquay ![]()
I play once in a blue moon, though not on private courses, rather the public ones. Though when I do play on the former, it's always in a "scramble" style where the main objective of everybody is to get as drunk as possible, as soon as they can, a fine way to kill a few hours. (that event, on one of our suppliers dime, is arranged so that everybody doesn't drink and drive that night, just a lovely day and a half at the base of Mt. Hood).

A good walk ruined as a wise man once said.
Still I support the existence of golf courses, they're great for those with an interest in autumnal fungi ;)
