Whats in a Name?

Does a person's name affect how you judge them?

I mean girls, would you date a fella called Cyril or Rupert? And would the lads fancy a girl called Gertrude?

Is a name cool, do you like your own name? Do you wish you had a different name?

only if you see some letters after his/her name.

like P.L.O.D for example.

You'd have to be pretty shallow to not want to date somebody just because of their name. I remember girls at school going through who they'd get off with at the School Disco and stating what their names would be if they married and rejecting any they didn't like the sound of!

Some names you do tend to get a mental image in your head, which is why you sometimes see people saying things like 'oh I didn't have you down as a ...'

I really do not like made up names. Reading your local paper after some 15 year old tart has given birth and invented some really 'cool' name for their offspring or misspelled a traditional name :dead:

Does a person's name affect how you judge them? Well, I probably wouldn't judge them on their name. Haven't done so, never will. I judge on their character anyway. [Hell, I knew a guy named Ariel in middle school and I have a coworker named Thomassina--she lets me call her Tom!!]

Is a name cool, do you like your own name? Do you wish you had a different name? A name can be cool [hell, I love the name Tristan; it just sounds so fuckin' neat!], it's all about the perspective of it--the name bearer can make it cool or otherwise.

Personally, I love both my real name AND my nickname. To me they're just a distinct part of who I am as a person, an identity. There are times, however, that I wish I had a different name, like Alexander/Alexia/Alexiel. Or Josephine, or Jordan. Or maybe even Jaime or James. Something that sounds just as cool, at least, in my opinion.

Unless the name leans towards something like Rainbow Brite, then uncommon names are great. Also, I love old names on little people. My neice's name is Evelyn and she's 4. My nephew's name is Javier Gomez and the child is the whitest Mexican you've ever seen, with white blonde hair and blue eyes. *smile*

Well, how about names of artist/bands?

I remember the name "The Get Up Kids." At first, i thought they're a Hanson type group, you know, MMMBop! But I find their cover of regret quite ok.

Kath by most Kathy by the Irish element in the family Kathryn by my Mum/family/Clients Kay by one only

My son, Michael, gets called

Michael (really!), Mike, Mikey, Mick, Mickey.......

Names are names!

However, I think I may draw the line at Cyril.

Well, funny you should say that....my son is called Henry (although he is still the only one we know of in Darlo among people we know), and we actually thought we were being original at the time!!

So start crying (although strictly speaking I may or may not be a friend....Newton Aycliffe, where exactly!?...approx. 9 miles North of Darlo, and where I grew up! :)

My Grandad was called Cyril.

But then again, a rose called by any other name would still smell sweet.

After a long think about names (and a read of the local newspaper), and have decided that the old names such as George, Alfie and even Cyril are not as bad as the corker that I saw today...... Asti! (I am hoping that the parents thinking of the place in Italy...and not the drink!)

I feel vexed at times when I encounter people whose names are those of the opposite sex. Say, girls with names like Ashley, George, Misha, etc.
