Nah, no way dude, they've done some amazing tracks,just cause they had in house fights (not unlike new order?)no need to dismiss them as some joke band,while the grunge scene dwindled i'd say the pumpkins were the only band to tread new water around siamese dream/ mellon collie period

I love the Pumpkins, and I love some of the old Grunge bands, but the Pumpkins were never Grunge.

Neither were Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains, Silverchair, Candlebox, or Soundgarden, for that matter, the media just lumped them all together because they were from Seattle. Grunge was a Punk Rock thing, not a Hard Rock thing. Soundgarden would be the closest out of the above, but only because they happened to be on Sub Pop, musically they were "alternative metal/hard rock". And the Pumpkins just got tossed in there because they have some heavy songs and got popular around the same time, they were doing something totally different than Grunge. I just looked at the cover of Tarantula, and I can see the idea behind using her in that context. I look forward to hearing the new album.

Smashing Pumpkins held my interest for about 15 minutes back in the day...then I discovered Helmet....

Edit:OK, that's sort of harsh.. Helmet was actually just another Alternative Metal band, and I sort of have a tie to them via a Tribal/Industrial band called Hitting Birth, so I shouldn't be quite so dismissive. I mean, they covered Bjork, and played at a gay rights benefit(along with Nirvana, Poison Idea, Calamity Jane, and speeches from Jello Biafra), so that sort of makes up for the metal aspects of what they did. But my first listens left me thinking "Ugh, Ozzy in a Hardcore band with a macho band name". there were at least 50 better similar bands in Portland at that time, and they didn't have a singer who sounded like Ozzy.

I stand by what I said:

a whinging goffic wannabe singing in a band adopted by millions of eyeliner wearing kiddies who hang out in shopping centres on Saturday afternoon because like noone understands them.

If you like them, then fair enough but prepare for swift execution when I get into office.

i don't think that many laughs is needed to get the point across but okay....i agree that there are a lot of whiny bastards who lead bands,but I really did like Siamese Dream. It reminds me of a cross between shoegazer/stoner rock music with a tinge of metal.

Not normally a fan of the American bands but the Pumpkins are alright. Yes he has and a moaney oul voice but I quite like that

I agree wholeheatedly. That album alone puts them among my favorite bands. Some of their stuff just before & after it were very good too.

PAH! Siamese Dream is by far their best.....just didn't get all the media whoopla to make people rally behind it like MC&IS got.

The main bad point of Melon collie is that it is the start of Corigan overamplifying his voice over the music....plus you can't listen all the way through, there really are some crappy songs on that album....

for me MAIS is their best one ...for that one their sound became more powerful.

my faves are. Thru the eyes of Ruby, Tonight, Tonight...Zero, To forgive, 1979 and Bullet...............
