Most consistant band

Which band would you say has put out the most consistant body of work throughtout its career and who are still around today? (if any?).

It seems to me that most bands go through highs and lows in their career and nearly always put out at least one dud album.

Im thinking of bands that were around since the 80's (or prior). Maybe New Order or REM as possible candidates. RHCP have certainly gone off the boil and I wouldnt dare mention U2. I havent got enough Pixies or Crowded House albums to comment on them. What other bands could be considered?

Although I love the Cure, the last two albums have been duds...

REM won't qualify, all their newer albums are duds, as is the same with U2...

My vote is for New Order and Social Distortion, not a bad album at all between them.

I dont think there are any bands that are consistant. After the first great album, the 2nd is full of left overs from the first, the third is nearly always shite as they begin to run out of ideas / material / direction. The 4th usually sees a return to form, with the 5th being their best. Albums number 6 & 7 are usually good, but not quite as good, but after this things go wayward.

I dunno about that - between JWH and Blood... there wasn't much decent stuff... But in terms of a classics-duds ratio, he's the man...

yep, the fall are mediocre, repetitive, and forgettable on all of their many albums. 50,000 fans can't be smart.

Could be 50,000 fans that love mediocre music...agree with Chris, most Fall albums don't leave a huge impact on me...

Bloodflowers is good

and a number of mixed success albums. hardly a 'consistent' band, especially given that they've drastically changed their sound about 5 times.

Trouble is this thread just becomes 'what bands do you like' so someone else can say 'nah they're shite'.

FWIW I'd go for REM. Never been my favourite band, but I've moderately liked just about everything they've done. And along with the Fall and Sonic Youth they've got NO, and most other bands, beat for sheer work ethic. In an ideal world NO would have been as prolific as those 3, while keeping a PCL/LL level of quality.
