Strangely I believed he was dead since the mid-90s. I guess I confused him with Mastroianni's death. Anyway I knew he shot his last film half if not completely blind with an assistance of a British director.

I loved his L'Avventura, L'Eclipse and Blow-Up.
Can't say that I loved L'Avventura much (actually it's the only film I ever feel asleep watching), but Blow Up is always a must-see whenever it's on TV. RIP.
though well made, his movies were always overrated pretentious wank.
i shed more tears over Bruno Mattei's death back in May.
