This war is so bizarre... this war for our way of life, this conflict which is unavoidable, etc... it is inconvenient for our armed forces to keep fighting this war, inconvenient for our home citizens to make sacrifices. No sacrifices from our way of life, no fighting to the death from our warriors. We just put our least essential forces in the way of fire, and maybe now we are finding this system being threatened.
Why don't we give all the people we send to jail a choice (USA has a huge prison population and just as many who get let free early becasue of prison overcrowding), a choice to fight in Iraq for two years to become a free citizen? Why not? They could find a way to send millions to Iraq. We are not exactly recruiting the best and brightest anyway.
they tried the whole letting people go in the military instead of prison thing...it didn't work very well...
besides...they ain't gonna be drafting my old ass...so bring it back...they can draft that Jesse guy....yeah...
and all those college students....
why not just send everybody who can't afford to go to college without student aid? or send those kids who can't afford a good lawyer to defend themselves against drug or alcohol offenses? millions there...
I'm not sure why Republicans like Bush, he has been such an incompetent lame imperialistic dictator... you can find reasons and excuses to coerce people. It is Bush's fault that he doesn't have the conviction to find b.s. ways to force people to fight his war... he is an incompetent fascist.
i doubt very much that the baby boomer generation would let the draft cone back. besides, i'd be off to canada! fuck america!

As for the draft, I really don't see it happening. I think it is the general making a political statement. I bet he mentioned something to the bush administration, but they didn't take him seriously. He starts jammering about a draft,the whole population becomes in arms over it, not the type of publicity the Bush admin wants....so I think it's just a strong-arm technique for the general's plans.
Also, if you really want to see a f'ed up war, start a draft. The problems we have now are nothing compared to the issues we'll have with people that don't really want to have any part of it....
My college professor's advice to me of how he responded when they threatened to draft him during Vietnam:
The first day he reported to the recruiter's office, he asked who was the highest ranking officer there. When they told him, he said, "Good, now I know who I'll have to shoot first." And off he went to freedom.
Yet he lives with a life he was completely unwilling to fight for, but I'm sure he'd be the first to cry if his 'rights' were taken away. Sure he complains about the poverty in Africa and the issues of the Middle East, but has yet to put any actual sweat into finding and creating a real solution. People like that are a dime-a-dozen...
Fuck the military. They try to draft me, I'm taking that shit down from the inside. Iraq has nothing to do with fighting for one's essential rights, just letting the rich become richer and making the poor kill brown-skinned people for them. I'd happily become an expat or a jailbird to exercise my freedom from conscription.
ummm...it wouldn't be the military drafting you but an act of Congress. Maybe a little reading might help you in that misconception

I don't have anything against the military people when they are intelligent people of honour, not just dummies. That's seldom. I know their profession is to kill, either offending or defending, so I always keep this in my head.
As for drafting... this is ridiculous. Because of the incompetence of the military and the administration that led to the current disaster in Iraq, someone came up with the idea of drafting to make it... worse? First an idea, then a force!
Secondly, from the patriotic and civil point of view, the whole idea of drafting is pointless, since there has been and is no threat to the US. It's just a military avventura in a foreign country that has little to do with America. I don't see anything patriotic in fighting in Iraq. Not only I do not see our interests in that country, no one else has pointed at such yet.
Until now, I still couldn't believe how Bush was reelected. I'm sure that almost half of those who voted for him last 2003/04 is now regreting their vote.

Half of Americans knew what they were voting for, there was no mystery in 2004... they voted for the pro-jesus, anti-gay, pro-white "race" world domination, killing of colored foreigners who have the wrong religion is justified and righteous, anti-science agenda. and they still feel that way. They got what they deserved.
People also complain about the price of gas which has doubled during the Bush administration, but there has not been any large movement to seriously switch away from cars that only average 15-22mpg... people are still driving their trucks, SUVs, Mercedes, and BMWs.
People just like to complain. Doesn't mean they actually want to change.

1st - The news loves to slant the "fear"factor in order to keep people watching. Victories in areas and any movement forward makes boring news, body counts keep people glued to the screen. So really can't agree with the "incompetance of the military" as that is what the news is trying slant.
2nd - The arguement of getting involved in the war maybe valid, however our presence there is now required. If we pull out completely and leave a vacuum there, we'll be fighting a war on our own shores soon enough....and that wouldn't be just us, I'm sure Britian and many other countries would be included in these attacks as well.
But again, the draft won't happen, just a strong-arm tactic of the general.
i hate the draft but it would've light a match underneath the ass of the american people. Iraq would be an afterthought right now. Why do you think the protests were so loud and persistent over the equally useless Vietnam War? THE DRAFT. The draft requires sacrifice from the public. Somehow the gov't gets into a war and it requires no sacrifice from us or them.

I am no fan of GWB but this post is ridiculous and riddled with inane errors. I don't even know where to being but to call Bush anti-gay is a wrong since he supports civil unions that would give more benefits than the Clinton civil unions would have and Bush is not anti-Muslim as he fought to include mosques in his faith initiatives and has met with Iraqi-Americans before the war and spoke at a mosque in Dearborn, Mi.
And the Iraq war has nothing to do with petrol. I am opposed to the war but wish some of the other people who were opposed to the war would actually educate themselves on how OPEC works before saying such silly things.
And to use Jon Stewart as a voice for the anti-war crowd? How low can we go?
