and don't forget that first New Order album...goth as they come, even if those around here would be loath to admit it.

I always thought they sounded a bit crap...but what's the difference?

I never considered myself as a goth.

Once I went to a club where they played old tunes you are speaking about. A real delight. Then I went there another time. They played current music for the same audience. It was boring, without soul, only the sounds, the voices - no spirit.

Well after saying that, I remember a genre called coldwave. Did you not use this word in England? That's it. Never considered myself as a goth, but a coldwave fan, no problem with it.

If your point is that start of goth is better than current goth, I'll agree with you there. Is the new stuff even still called goth? Can someone name me some new goth bands?

Most of the bands Banshee is talking about have never been goths, really. Two options :

  1. Current goth bands claim that they had been influenced by the bands we never considered as goth.
  2. It is a journalist error. A 40 years old journalist would say that KJ has always been a punk band when a 20 years old journalist may think that, indeed, KJ and others were goth bands.

Anyway, in my opinion, bands like Sisters of Mercy, Cult, Mission and so on were goth bands... I do not know anything about current goth which does not sound like the older bands to my ears. The only thing which seems to remain goth are the overalls and the haircuts...

What i was trying to point out was that all these youngsters called 'goths',tend to like modern death/heavy rock type stuff.siouxsie and the banshees, cure, joy division etc.dont sound anything like that so are NOT goth

It seems to me that new goth is only about shock value. Something that states a love for the morbid and death, which is what original goth was never about. Its become some sort of in-yer-face rebeliousness.... any time I hear this new music (or see the morons included with it) I think of the Cake lyrics from "rock& roll lifestyle":

Excess ain't rebellion.You're drinking what they're selling.Your self-destruction doesn't hurt them.Your chaos won't convert them.They're so happy to rebuild it.You'll never really kill it.Yeah, excess ain't rebellion
