What is it about eh? What's your take / interpretation of the lyrics?
Just enjoy the friggin song , i know.But the song never fails to fascinate me.The structure , the sound , the mood ,the lyrics.Fantastic.
Not letting the fear of outside forces ruin something good.
Dunno, always thought they were better in their previous incarnation as a dance band. The name of which completely escapes me right now...
"Space Face" is a classic. 
Dunno,but my interpretation of the song,is of a tormented guy, of a relativley advanced age with alot of regrets about his life..Looking to justify and make sense of his lot in life,but with fear,angst and regret governing his state of mind...The song does'nt really let on what the man's circumstances are,if I recall..But he'd do well to take stock,and remember we are all plebs,who do well to get our 3 score and 10 out of life..And if he's been a decent enough bloke,there should be fuck all to worry about 
But not everyone is as philosophical as that,I suppose....
Then again, it could be about a man having a shit in the woods.Who gives a rat's tits what it's about?
The main thing is the drums are sublime Two drum kits on the go at the same time I think..

We made sure we went to the Rivermead centre at Reading 93 after New Order to catch Sub Sub, as i was dying to see Melanie Williams do Ain't No Love (Ain't No Use)with them .Had a real crush on her at that time.But she didn't appear

It seemed to me that he was singing to his girlfriend/wife from the grave. She's trying to move on from him, but his memory is emblazed upon her mind Even though she is physically moving away, he is still with her as long as she thinks of him.

Thats the one, got the Robs Records album somewhere.
Sub Sub were excellent, I went through a phase of collecting their CDs in the early naughties as they were becoming as rare as hen's teeth even back then. Picked up most of the stuff that was on Rob's Records plus a few foreign imports.
Coast, Inside of This, Senna, Southern Trees and Jaggernath are all top quality choons; especially Jaggernath.
Twas a bit infuriating they never properly released Spaceface on CD until the fairly recent Hooky Hacienda 3xCD.
As for There Goes The Fear = best single of 2002
Reminds me of my early uni days... bliss.
All I can say is that it makes me buy the record. I mainly listen to the music while driving, so I did not really pay too much attention to the lyrics. Still, it is a very good tune, easy chorus to remember and to sing along in traffic-jams or anywhere else - I remember driving home from Nice by the seaside on little roads...
Things apart, I only have a Sub-Sub (trying to have a record of them in France was a real challenge) and the four tracks are much better than any Doves I know in my humble froggy opinion...
BTW, I heard it in CSI Season 4 yesterday (don't ask me which episode)
I always pictured Doves as good musicians with a weak singer though... there is nothing special in lead vocals, that's for sure.
But then again, Rob Gretton was New Order's manager

On the studio version of course the Latin-y drum outro bit is played by guest musicians in the studio - all of who are credited on the record sleeve!
To be honest I never "got" that ending section - how the song just veers into this Latin samba beat and finishes like that. I want to know what THAT is all about!!

That could describe a lot of groups. The only groups whose lead singers had amazing instruments for voices were like Queen and the occasional hard rock/metal band like Judas Priest.
"there Goes The Fear" is one of my all time favorites. I will listen to it every morning before I go to work, Ironically a great motivator of a song.
I love Doves, have seen them live and cannot wait for their next cd.
