When is the future? (a thought on DVDs, CDs, satellite, etc.)

My question is when it'll be possible to have access to all movies of the world of all times via satellite, a sort of a universal satellite library from which you can retrieve basically everything at any second, without downloading, etc. Of course, for a monthly payment.

I don't get these idiots that stand behind CD & DVD industries. It takes so much effort for them to do something, throw a ripoff price and expect people buying it. Well, soon there'll be no DVDs and CDs (or very few, like vynil nowadays), and no one uses the current conjucture to do a better job on those media products.

Let's take New Order.. by the time they'll finally decide to release a DVD with TV specials footage or other stuff, or CD with demos and concerts, the market won't be big. Even now people easily can get the rarest footage off Youtube without paying a dime (the only weak side of Youtube is low resolution quality of clips).

Hum. That sounds way too complicated. You'd almost need your own satellite for that.

The best bet is still faster and faster and cheaper interweb as in South Korea, Japan and Hong Kong.

Right, I didn't mean particularly satellite, the Internet could work that way, too, it just still consumes time when downloading.

Right, I didn't mean particularly satellite, the Internet could work that way, too, it just still consumes time when downloading.

Bloody hell.Slow down you lot,i've only just managed to get C5. The only time i would consider getting satellite tv is if my local was to stop showing the footy.

i've just cancelled Setanta. but i wasn't thinking much about footy when i decided to get this. My mind was more on Hungary and the Czech Republic, and Sweden. bargain for that price. a cash in hand job. just don't tell any bizzies or Sky tv.

The idea in the future is basically make you pay for play of some sort, that you won't actually own anything (like iTunes for example).

I'm sure a lot of people here collect something like music or movies... where is the motivation to keep purchasing stuff and collecting stuff over time if you don't actually own anything??? They need a physical presence to put something on your shelf. If course if a format goes obsolete every 5-10 years you have to it buy again.

If everything movie and television ended up "pay for play", would you pay for 90% of the stuff you watch if you had to select individually? You would probably pass on most. That is why cable TV has the right idea which will last, you pay for a package and pick what you want from that

True, many people need to own physical objects of the media that is not physical (music, movies) to avoid inconvenience of saerching, downloading or simply paying for iTunes. But once those obstacles are gone, then what? That'll be interesting. On the other hand millions of people listen to the radio everyday and rarely bother to buy music they like.

I agree, cable TV (or in my case Dishnetwork) is reasonable. I don't want to pay for each movie I want to see either. But if I have to pay just a monthly "pass" to access the virtual library with unlimited number of media products, I'd go for that. Now I don't watch 85% of cable channels. In fact, I don't like live TV much. Blockbuster is interesting but uses obsolete means to physically deliver a DVD.

I hope that digital cable will still blow satellite out of the water. As for the DVDs, I am miffed at how the majority of them are region specific, and how some movies are available on Blu-Ray, but others are in HD-DVD format. I hope that technology will be more accommodating in the future.

Blue ray/ hd dvd - bit like betamax and vhs,in the end they'l only be one winner,but,perhaps by that time they'l be a different format out anyways.

I have never got owt from i-tunes,as said above i prefer to have something to handle and something to look at after,oo er missus!

Having said that,if two copies of "here are the young men" vid came up for sale in either betamax or vhs,which would command the higher price?

Betamax of course cos we've nowt to play em on! same as the cdv's,pre-cursor to the dvd.

My opinion is that people like to collect physical things they can touch, smell and see, so we will never see the end of physical products. The idea that everything will be available all at once for download is pretty neat but for its success depends on who owns the content and who provides the transfer medium. Its a bit like the how in the old days the breweries (content provider)owned the pubs (distribution medium), and this created several monopolies where only specific beer could be bought in certain pubs. Obvious nightmare. This was broken up to provide greater competion.
