HD-DVD

Invested in a playstation 3 the otherday on a bit of a whim because of the blu ray player thingy, must say think i've jumped the gun abit without researching properly, the titles out are dog shit to say the least!

and as for playstation 3 titles just as shoddy....oh dear

Ummm errr, Playstation 3 uses Blu Ray, as HD-DVD is the name for the product by Microsoft.

HD is very over rated. I bought the tv, dvd, hdmi lead and its only slightly better.

Just a trick to get people to spend more money. I won't re-buy my DVDs as BlueRay or HD-DVD. Total crap if you ask me. I can't imagine that those new formats will kill the normal DVDs...

There is no used for HD DVD if you don't have a 1080p TV...

Watch you talkin 'bout?, you do not have to own a 1080p set to see the vast improvement over standard def. DVD which outputs say 480 lines. You just need a HD ready TV which displays 720p. Steve One says it's only slightly better, does he mean DVD playback or HD?. DVD playback will be slightly better as it will upscale to 720p or 1080p but you should see a vast difference in quality if you actually play a HD disc be it Blue-ray or HD DVD. If you aren't happy with the current choice of software, sit tight - new titles are coming out all the time especially how sales are rocketing globally since Sony's released the cheaper 40Gb PS .

I'm sitting back and waiting for the outcome of this battle and expect to be able to pick up a non-brand player of the winning format in a couple of years or so for $60.

What I'm suprised no one mentioned yet, is that bluray makes your dvd collection obsolete...where as the HDdvd still can play old dvds....the only upshot of bluray is the possibility of hitting 200GB of info (but currently only at 50 gb), whereas the hd dvd can only hold up to 30 gb with the possibility of 60gb.......but really, what the hell is going to require 200GB???

Oh and the bluray are more costly due to manufacturing......screw the blu ray

Playstation 3 plays old regular DVDs, so I'm not sure about the obsolete idea. Both formats are playing the same game, they are going to try to get everybody to buy everything again in better quality.

...but how much REAL true 1080p content is there really so far? How are you sure? But no doubt a HDTV and 720p-ish more or less content blows away old regular TV...

And that is true, the Blu-ray movies suck so far as choices. They are putting out Kubrick movies on Blu-ray now thou, other than that it is recent big budget crap. And one way or another you are going to have to upgrade to a new player. They will stop putting out new releases on old DVD. Or maybe when they drop the prices on HD-DVD and Blu-ray players they are going to "lose" the ability to play old DVD discs just to screw everybody (you know, cost cutting...), I would not be surprised.

The problem is that they increased screensize at the same time as display resolution. AND they switched to LCD displays. The result is that every HD demo I've seen in a shop is APPALLINGLY aliased (that's "steppy" to you) every diagonal line looks like a staircase. Shite really.

If I'd been the one making up "the next big format" I'd have made it 50fps for better movement......but of course then they couldn't try to con us into buying everything again.

But the problem is Warner Bros. won't do a decent transfer of Kubrick's films from the original negatives. The regular DVDs they put out a while back have pretty poor transfers. That shit needs remastering, not just a "pitiful portable picnic player."

Remember that you're only going to notice significant difference if you have a decent HD screen, HDMI-level cables, HD player and HD discs. If your screen is crap or if you're playing SD DVD discs, it won't be worth it.

If you can't see the difference running a complete HD set-up then you need your eyes checked.

I recently picked up a 50" 720p plasma screen and simply watching HD TV broadcasts puts plenty of DVD disc images to shame.

Also, as Pope said, don't expect stunning images from films that were never transferred and remastered sufficiently. Won't matter what you're viewing on.

The Land of Plenty.. Verdict is in. As an example, here's where you can see the difference.Discovery HD.ca Weeks back, did the rounds shopping for a new LCD HDTV for m' Dad who just wanted a better picture. Simple as that. Usual News and a Local Political show. No Gaming, not interested in Smoother- Lag free Sport. A minimalist and so Intrigued by it Doubling as a PC Monitor if wished..

There was a Show done on WWI- Planes that apparently has just paid for the screen and then some. Result.

After watching a few films on Blu ray i'm impresed with the picture,i watched a few Standard DVds and the upscalling is no way near, mind you not that its meant to be.

i think i'll only be swapping action films for Blu ray can't see the point in the odd melodrama or tv program.
