one of the greatest authors of the century, IMO. his daughter was a friend of mine in high school--a lovely girl.

he wrote, among other things, the naked and the dead and the executioner's song, which is one of my favourite books.
i actually met him briefly a few years back at a literature conference. he was a grump, but it was quite funny. the conference was taking place in Utah and the whole Terri Schiavo thing was all over the news at the time and he was referencing it in his keynote address. a few Mor(m)ons stood up and, full of vainglorious piety, chastised him for supporting the right to die side. I wish I could recall what he said, but without even missing a beat, he completely shut down their argument and dismissed their religious beliefs in the same breath. very funny.

I've only read fragments of The Executioner's Song. Strangely, I have heard his name mentioned on NPR about a month ago.
