I'm coming to the end of my time on Roaccutane , it should have been 4 months but was extended for another 2 because A. It hadn't quite finished the job and B. I have the liver of a blue whale, apparently most of my readings (choleserol, triglycerides and various other fats and sugars are checked, to make sure liver function is not impaired to the point where it's basic housekeeping is suffering), got better not worse
Here's the really odd thing.......
I've been working while on them, but while on a week's holiday spent on the sofa, things started to clear up really well, and within a day or two of returning to work, got worse again. So I asked to go on reduced hours until the pills are done. That was fine and now I'm only doing 2 nights a week. Since then things are getting MUCH better. BUT, not only have the effects increased, but also the side effects...... Eg. 2 hours in Asda with my mum the other day left me feeling like I used to feel after an 18 hour day doing sound and humping PA around, you know when the nervous energy leaves you and you realise all your muscles are twatted. I was a mess and had to sleep it off and could hardly walk for 2 days. Also I've started getting pill induced depression. A very strange thing, I have, as everyone has, been depressed before, but this feels qualitatively different, like no matter how low I actually feel, I can rationalise that there is no reason for it, and that gets me through it. Everything's dried up, my eyes are sore, my nose is blocked with bogies that have turned to concrete in the absence of appropriate nasal mucus, and my brething is getting bad because my lungs are not secreting enough cleaning substances.
Still, 2 more weeks, just two more weeks, and with any luck my life will be normal, as it is, the condition is totally on the run, and at this stage the cure is becoming more bothersome than the disease.....but that's a good thing.
As for the drug companies and ethics.....they think ethics is a small town in Idaho. Doctors are often on what amount to commission ....prescribe 600 doses of dodgygear4000 this month and you get a golfing holiday in Florida. This is far more prevailent with "panacea" drugs, those that work on numerous things, as there is a tendancy to say "I could clock up another 10 does if I used it against $CONDITION which is might just work on cos it worked on $OTHER_CONDITION".
Actually, that is how roaccutane came to be used on my little problem....it was originally used on classic acne in severe cases....and since my thing is related to acne they gave it a go. However, there has been no dodginess in prescribing it for me. I was given gobs og info, and briefed thoroughly over several months before finally being given it, and made totally aware of everthing that could go wrong. Example...loads of suicides, although my own GP (rather than the consultant prescribing it) made the very valid point that as an antiacnoid, most people getting it were 15 year old ugly bastards with no girlfriend
Even if the condition finally fucks off, I will be a different person, forever changed. I've lost contact with mates (can't go out, cos I can neithr drink nor stand crowds), and I've been RIGHT to the brink of sanity and peered over the egde (pointing out, as my nearest and dearest did, that I live on the clifftop anyway will not garner any agument from me). If it weren't for some of the folks round here and two real world mates, I'd never have come this far.
I'm rambling, how very out of character.
