I've not looked at the trailers yet. But what are they intending on doing? Having them fight from wheelchairs with Zimmer Frames? And the Star Trek "Utopian" future fascinates me. There's meant to be no wars, starvation or poverty. But they still use money (or credits/tokens)? Plus there's no crime, but they still jail people? Then there's their well developed military output: phasers, photon torpedoes, time displacer's, teleportation, and fuck knows what. These are one bunch of mixed-up kids*!*
I was big into trek until I seen two things.
The ship loses all power. Picard is trapped in a lift with kids. They, in great fear of falling, climb to safety. Now even assuming that the generation of artificial gravity does not in fact require a couple of gigawatts of juice........who the FUCK would put gravitic plating in the bottom of a lift shaft and not just in the floor of the lift?????? Besides given the inverse square law of gravity, a force that could cause them to fall with appreciable or Earthlike acceleration from 100ft up, would crush anyone standing at ground level to a greasy spot.
Still, when I watch the first (and best, cos Ike Asimov kept them straight as far as possible)movie, and see the Consitution class Enterprise leaving dock with the dawn bursting from the Earth's limb, I usually blub like a baby.....because that's the only future we have, out there. Sooner or later Sol's gonna eat this planet, you think global warming is bad now.....you know fuck all about what will happen one day.
to slightly misquote Commander Sinclair of Babylon5 (where gravity, I may add comes from rotation, ie a "real" concept).
"No. We have to stay here and there's a simple reason why. Ask ten different scientists about the environment, population control, genetics and you'll get ten different answers, but there's one thing every scientist on the planet agrees on. Whether it happens in a hundred years or a thousand years or a million years, eventually our Sun will grow cold and go out. When that happens, it won't just take us. It'll take Marilyn Monroe and Lao-Tzu, Einstein, Morobuto, Buddy Holly, Aristophanes, Peter Hook, Ian Curtis .. and all of this .. all of this was for nothing unless we go to the stars."

Nooooooooooooooooo***!***
:dead: Life without Miss MM and MR IC, I'd rather be died! :dead: :rip:
(PS: If you've not already, Doc read some Iain M. Banks, I think you'd love it).
Used to love Babylon 5,because there was more chance of seeing a space battle each week than in a season of ST,them being all civilised an all.
We won't blast them,we'll create a Sub-Space field around them.. ![]()
Dead sad at the end when they finally throw the switch at penultimate episode, and "scuttle" the Babylon.
New Trek film features a relatively unknown cast apart from Simon Pegg as Scotty. Though Nimoy appears as older Spock.

I usually need a hug and a cup of tea after watching "sleeping in light", the episode of which you speak.
I dunno, this new trek movie seems daft, shouldn't they have done a movie with Ben )Erol Brown) Sisco instead?
Dunno I think they've done the right thing by going back to the roots.ENTERPRISE should have worked really,if only for that annoying Vulcan woman.
No techno babble, just pure escapist fun to appeal to everyone.

Spot on with Enterballs, when a show relies on soft core porn to get you to watch, it means even the makers know it's shite.
I hate techno babble too, as it appears in trek anyway. I love it if it's a genuine explanation (and not just big words strung together in gibberish), OR if it's really ludicrously silly (H2G2, Dr Who etc). But "we'll just invert the phase modulation on the tachyon emitter in order to sidestep a hard and fast "rule" of the trek "universe" that has gotten in the way of this week's soap opera plot".
Fuckin Gamma Quadrantenders.
I thought that this was going to be a thread about footballers who are looky-likies to characters from star-trek?
does anyone know of any??
