Soooo, is England becoming more unsafe? do the people in England need to reclaim the street from the yobs?

Due to my job @ a dutch newspaper i'v been reading a lot English newspapers lately and following the news in England quite closely and a thing that always comes up is the violence of youths in the large cities (and smaller ones as well off course).

Question for the peeps here: do u feel unsafe on ur streets? do feel are there more (large) gangs/groups of chavs/yobs around and do u see any solution for this?

Just a few questions raising in my mind. Maybe u can give me some answers...

National Service

We dont have 'Chavs' in Scotland,we have 'neds',

but I reckon a wee couple of years in the army would sort most of them out

never felt unsafe in the streets.

and i live quite close to the city centre, in a part of Liverpool, that's got a bad name, even in Liverpool.

us scousers are streetwise to all that carry on that's built up in the tabloid press. we smell danger.

although, its best to make sure you are not on the streets alone, pissed as a newt, at say 2am in the morning, round our way. just in case.

It's getting worse that's for sure.. There is this group of yobs who hang around locally, all about 16-20and one of them kicked my daughter off her bike, and hurt her.. She came home told me,identified which lad,and I went and took my own retribution.. Got a few threats after that, but nothing came of them. Then on New Years Day,this same gang who all have ASBOS between them, kicked to death a 56 year old man out walking his dog..Scum. It's the more vulnerable members of society like children and older people who don't want to go out to the shops because of these chavs that is cause for concern..

And you can't get away from the fact these young men's families have not brought them up to have any respect..they are second generation scum, who never stood a chance from what I see.

But I still say,as bad as the yoof now appear to be,they are still in the minority, the wrong uns.. Most are fine young men and women, who restore abit of faith, but you only ever see and read about the shitty element.

Hope you sorted that out good and proper... sorry to hear yer daughter had to be treated like that, what the hell happened to parenting these days? People can't seem to be arsed in taking care of thier kids... so thier laziness becomes yer and yer daughter's problem.... hopefully that doesn't happen again.

I was'nt as violent as I wanted to be,cos you have to be a bit careful..Just got him on his own( I got one of his mates to give me his address, which turned out to be a fake, but I got him eventually) and left him with two very sore bulging ears, and a promise of what might happen if he went near my kids again.Nothing permanent.. But ye,the parenting is an issue..Like I said,in the two years since that happened, the little scumbag and his cronies are now up for murder.Needless to say the family of the man are utterly devastated

This also reminds me of a time about ten years ago, when I lived a rough area of Middlesbrough. You'd routinely get these yobs hanging around the local Spar and usually they did'nt bother me,until once.. One of them tried to bum a fag off me, and I give my stardard "fuck off you scruffy little cunt" reply.. Then the twat dropped a name about who his uncle was,and how he was going to sort me..A well known Boro hard bastard,if not a nationally known one.I did'nt like that at all.Again, nothing came of it,thank fuck! Cos we were talking big league nutjob.

Standard oik behaviour. Pretending to be related to superior oiks.

It is a bit of a rediculous argument. Some politician says that there are parts of London where she wouldn't feel safe walking on her own. Hardly a revelation, or that much of a shock to anyone. Or hardly something that is particular to London. Common fucking sense if you ask me. God knows what the opposition lot feel they're going to achieve by crying foul. They could accuse her of stating the fucking obvious, I suppose.

Yes I realised that even then, but it gave me pause for thought,as the superior oik mentioned is a big player in the Teesside underworld..He has a book out now,and has been on Macintyre's Underworld, but only ever taxes drug dealers and is good to his mother, and is'nt really an out and out thug according to his book. You know the type:rolleyes:

Sounds like the sort to give his nephew a good kicking if he ever found out he smoked!

Better safe than sorry though!

I think in many cases you can only take the law into your own hands. My 6 year old is on the Autistic Spectrum (Aspergers Syndrome) and I know the time will come in the future when he will get the bullying etc that these kids dish out just because he comes across a bit differently.

When that time comes and my wife and I discuss what we can do to protect him then it may well be that I will seek my own retribution. My wife won't allow it, but in my experience revenge is a dish best served cold and when it arrives they don't know where it's come from, just ask the fella who ripped me off when laying my drive. The reason they don't know is because they will have pissed off more than just a few families / other kids over the years. Just ensure you have a good alibi.

I know you have to be carefull, as with Boaties experience , :thumb: , but these troglidites need putting in their place, good on yer fella.

Vigilantism is the way forward!!!!!!!................

Sounds like A Clockwork Orange.

People having always been complaining about "Those damn kids... what wrong with these kids nowadays" ... since like forever.

White English drunks seem a hell of a lot funnier than white American drunks thou.

There seemed to be an increasing number of teenage stabbings reported in the media - mainly fatalities last year, but that may just be due to the raised profile of these cases, spurred on by so-called Government 'Initiatives' and reported crime figures. On the news yesterday evening, a 14 year old girl in Chorley has been stabbed repeatedly while walking across a park. That's all I heard on the news. There have been a number of cases so far this year, so it looks like reported figures will be higher than last year - probably a considerable percentage increase. The 'gang' and weapons culture seems to be propagated in the USA (A generalisation, but still backed up by most independent figures) and reaches Europe first via the UK and gradually seeps Eastwards. Maybe mainland Europe will see similarly increasing problems within the next ten years. Italy seems to suffer in a similar way to the UK, maybe due to a far greater youth interest in all things American, from films to youth culture. I'm just expressing the way it all seems to me - there's good and bad everywhere and I've experienced both, not always at the hands of so-called young 'chavs' 'neds' and 'scallies' but maybe from the previously mentioned 1st Generation scum.

Then again, anyone remember the Teds with flicknives, Mods and Rockers on the beaches and Skinheads vs. everyone from the 1950s to the 1990s? Maybe it's not such a new phenomenon after all...

Are you doing research here, Martijn?! :skeptic:

If anything, I think Engerland's a helluva lot safer than it was, say, in the 80's. I grew up in a provincial town and if you were out of a Saturday night virtually everyone was underage. You couldn't move for fights breaking out in pubs and clubs. I considered it 'the norm'.

Nowadays, you see nothing of the kind. Everyone's far more chilled. I still have the odd night back in the town I grew up in and have seen no hassle anywhere. Plenty of places for the older generation to go out drinking too, whereas when I was growing up it seemed 'sad' to be out past a certain age.

Tend to agree with Al in the main, but you'll always find trouble somewhere or other. Two pissed teenage twats decided that my buying some fags on Sunday night was a crime worthy of assault, they picked the wrong guy in the wrong mood at the wrong time though. Two busted noses later they got the message.

Blimey, you freak! How many noses have you got?! :eek3:

Please note: this should not be construed as a personal attack and I do not wish to get banned.

I think Martijn means on the streets themselves rather than in the pubs and clubs. That's where the problem is. 1 or 2 17 year old chavs are not really an intimidating prospect, but 20-30 of them kicking to death ageing dogwalkers and being yobs around the shops terrorising little kids and women is on the increase,certainly...I used to hang around myself as a kid,in a very large gang, where we had not much to do,like alot of people did..But we had enough respect not to kick fuck out of anything that moved.(we concerntrated on trying to fuck all the girls in our crowd, which was perfectly natural then,as is now I'd say)Now alot of them don't have that respect, sadly.

Bit of research yes, hope u don't mind:\ohwell: but also out of my own interest in England and the way the country is developping.

Thanx for all ur repsonses so far, really like to read the things u have to say about stuff happening in ur country.

And yes, i was talking about street-culture, not so much the pubs and clubs (although it seems that a lot of violence also happens after pub/club closing time).

And again, i'm trying to discover if the media has a big hand in this as well. It's mainly through the newspapers and webistes of papers that i get the information from and they seem to shout that streets are on fire (i read the guardian, times, independent and sometimes the sun for page three:blush:). And i am trying to figure out if this could happen (or is already happing) in Holland and how the media would react over here.
