Right now that is probably true, as blue ray uses,well a blue ray, whereas conventional dvd uses red light (the shorter wavelengths of the blue light being the key to getting more data on). But if they want to sell drives they will need to add a second read head that can pick up older discs, there's bugger all in the drive system itself that would be a problem.
Having said that, I could understand a red laser not picking up a blue ray disc (the red light waves would be larger than the pits on the discs), BUT blue light should read a red-light disc with no problems, provided the reflective coating does not absorb blue light.
