Bands you want to like but cant

for me:

The Fall - Admire Mark Smith enormously but thats about it The Clash - Like the lyrics and attitude, not the actual songs Bauhaus/Sisters of Mercy - Both not a patch on JD Depeche Mode - Enjoyed ETS and JCGE enormously but was so disappointed with everything else Bloc Party - Lead singer is eminently quotable, but no (although I Still Remember is Good All the other bands on Factory apart from JD/NO and the Mondays At the moment disappointed with Hot Chip

If I want to like a band, I generally find there is nothing stopping me.

Why on earth would anyone "want" to like The Fall?

I've tried to understand Arcade Fire and listened to the albums numerous times. I don't think their crap, but at the same time I don't understand all the hype behind them. Seems like average music to me.

Depeche Mode, it's not terribly deep music but rather superficial, if you don't like it that much to start with you're not gonna miss much. You're better off listening elsewhere.

The Fall has such a huge catalogue... the mid 80s stuff like This Nation's Saving Grace or Wonderful and Frightening World of might be the best place to start, the early 80s stuff is harder to digest but worth the effort. The last two decades of the Fall are pretty uneven, but a few fine tracks.

Sisters of Mercy has not dated very well, their main hits were overblown Steinman (The guy behind The Meatloaf)) productions, more of a guilty pleasure... kinda silly now.

Bauhaus... well they started out a lot more skilled musically than Joy Division and crafted a unique post punk catalogue, if you can get past the posturing and images of Goth cliches

The Clash... Sandinista might be their best but is an unedited mess. The earlier stuff might be disappointment if you are expected cliched punk or just plain hardness.

Bloc Party does not excite me so far, i don't know what i'm missing

Mate, just stick to JD/NO and you'd get less headache.

The funny story is that I made an effort to "like" New Order, because I was heavily into JD, but when I saw NO videos on MTV many years ago - True Faith, BLT - it all sounded like pop shit, actually like the Pet Shop Boys. See how it worked?

Things to like and dislike... anything worth liking probably ain't so bad... but what about music that's like a bad confession ??

London Calling (the album) is by far the best and is ground breaking! If anyone likes any punk music today they HAVE to pay homage to that album... almost every punk album derived from that... granted the Sex Pistols had their thing, but London Calling started genres on single songs off that album....

sandinista would make a great EP. unfortunately it's spread over two albums.

i like arcade fire but i feel like their too epic for me. I think they wouldn't mind being the next U2. I recently heard their cover of 'this must be the place' and i threw up a little bit.

Actually, it is 36 tracks on 3 records, 6 full sides! ... their way of saying "fuck you" to the mainstream music business. Too bad the Clash burnt out a generation before the internet age.

More a case of what bands today that I can't get to like and probably never will, because they're mostly shite! :)

The list is quite a long one though: The Gossip, Arctic Monkeys, Franz Ferdinand, Babyshambles, Dirty Pretty Things, Libertines, Fan The Flames, The Twang, The Zutons, The Coral, The Fucking Cunts, The Cheese Brigade, The Arcade Fire, Editors, Kaiser Chiefs, Bloc Party, Kasabian, Lots Of Other Bands Beginning With K, The Feeling, Broken Social Scene, British Hot Chip Pan Fire, The Noggins, The Courteeners, The Young Knives, pretty much anything the NME champions really.....(the Joleon And The Jing Jang Jong? The Ting Tings? The Scrubbers? Gimme A Fucking Break!!!) with one noble exception of course, and that's The K*****s - whom I absolutely adore with all my heart cos they are Entertainment with a Capital E and Put The Smile On My Face In Times Of Dire Misery And Trouble. So I take my hat off to Foghorn Creamhorn Flowers and his merry bunch of pranksters for not taking themselves too seriously.....

Bauhaus - I love BLD and She's in Parties, but that's about it. Trail of Dead - I only like 'Another Morning Stoner" but otherwise, pah. The following bands had a stellar first album but then lost the map altogether: Block Party, Iterpol, The Editors, Coldplay. And inasmuch as I love Oasis, particularly their first two albums and 'Masterplan', it's tough to like the rest of their stuff these days.

I'd think of more but... *sigh* Dinner calleth.

When I bought and listen to it, i discovered it was shite. Tried to listen to it a number of times for i might like it later. It didn't happened.

Never really warmed to The Charlatans,being a Manc band an'all.Apart from The Only One I Know and Weirdo,never really got into them.
