What, in your opinion, was the best year for music in the 1980's and why?

87 but only because that was the first year I took a serious interest in music... First time I heard NO as well...

loved the 80,s madly up till 87,
fave 83,, bunnys were hot, order came of age and the rest ,, bliss in ibiza , though for live gigs 84 is hard to beat.

1983 , 1984 , 1985 i was 15-17.New Order's halcyon developing years coincided with my own halcyon developing years

86 was a bit naff but 87 was alright ..... True Faith , Pump Up The Volume by MARRS
Although I am only 24 I selected 89 on the basis that it was the year that Madchester took off, the rave scene was at its peak and you had several really good albums by New Order, the Cure and the Stone Roses. Plus of the course the impact of ecstacy on the music scene was huge whether it be the repetitive bleeps and rhythms of house or the ecstatic melodic energy of the Roses (although of course the drug had started to become available in the UK a good 18 months previous)
1987 for me , first time I listened to Joy Division and New Order 's 'Substance'. True Faith remains one of the best songs ever for me. That year I was only 16 ...

Pointless question... punk and indie music evolved and became a major part of culture, rap and hip hop become a major part of culture, chicago and detroit turned club music into a major part of culture... music exploded in all directions and the mainstream become much less significant was the biggest change from the 70s to 1990.
Killing Joke sounds so quaint nowadays... funny how we had it so hard and had to push and struggle back in the 80s

around 83/84 i think.cocteau's,cure,bunnymen,start of the smiths,was it lowlife 84 ? i am probally wrong but early eighties was top because i was in a scene with people in my town at the time
