As I fumble my way along the path of trying to learn bass to NO songs / music are there any sources of music sheets that show the strings / frets for LWTUA, LV, PK, BM etc....?

Honestly, because Hooky plays melody, his lines are easier to pick out that most. Make sure the plank is properly tuned (use a tuner, guitar-rig or pitch pipes), and thrash up and down the fretboard until you hear something that matches. I find learning from tab harder than doing it by ear.

But to be getting on with.... Ceremony is 15th fret d-string and 17th fret G string, then for the 2nd bar drop the finger on the D down to the A string, same fret. You can throw an open-D in in between.

With New Order and Joy Division, do what Steve says and play it by ear - hit and miss at first, but you'll get the hang of it.

I can't read music any more, but once you get into the swing of it, you can usually pick out and play most bass parts.

The essential thing is practice.

Try listening to your favourite five songs and (in your head) see if you can pick out the bass lines. Give each one a couple of gos then choose the song you think you could do best.

Then try playing it - practice until you're happy with it, then choose another.

It'll annoy the hell out of your family and neighbours

BTW< not to put you off using tab, but learning by ear will do more good for your playing AND your musicianship, because one day you'll have to busk along by ear with other people  so best to do things that way from the get-go. And each new tune you learn makes the next one easier. Of course there are things that will be mental blocks to you (Primus' Tommy the Cat is like Kryptonite to me), and you may need to reach for score or tab, or even the dreaded dodgy you-tube tuition video, but there will be less and less as time goes on.

Most tab on the internet is gibberish anyway.

Fair play, Les is a fucking alien, but I've beaten quite a few of his lines, just not Tommy. It's playable on a 4-string as he often does so live, usually on a fucking Fender just to make it that much harder.

Primus only exist to piss bassists and drummers off, and to show guitatrists how to play without pissing everyone else off

As for Mr Hook, well, he IS getting on a bit

PAh, THAT's the problem with the young people of today, the ones who're supposed to guide and supervise them.

In my day, rather than paying this extortionate whippersnapper, we'd simply have replace the fuse in his amp with a 2 inch nail and made sure a pint was "accidentally" tipped down the back. If he were to get mouthy while recovering, I'd just arrange for gigs of gay porn to be "found" on his computer

Jack, you have been warned :thumb:
