i've just started training for the great yorkshire run and i'm finding my usual soundtrack of twee jangly guitar pop and plinky plonky electronica isn't really cutting it.

any suggestions for the kind of anthemic, rousing tunes that'll keep my spirits high as i pound the pavements? i'm thinking the sort of stuff that'd fit nicely over a rocky montage, please.

Lose yourself in one of these mixes. Fcuking loads to choose from, should be something to suit your tastes.

I've been listening to the new Whip album in the gym.

I've never really done gym or running, but for walking/hiking Sigur Ros work wonders, Doves too...

Been running and going to the gym for 6 weeks now. Running is by far the hardest and most painful thing to do - but it's really got me back into music in a really massive way.

I've been listening to The Whip a lot, but my ex brother - in - law (Liverpool scum) has been making me up some CDs with some really old original house dance tracks from the 80's and other random CDs with The Clash, B.A.D and rare re-mixes. Granted, some tracks i'm not too sure what he's thinking - but generally i'm loving the music i'm getting and really enjoying my running listening to them!

Which ones? I've only got one album by him and not listened to it for years. Great though. Gonna dig it out tonight.

I like to run/ride to house music usually. I'm also liking Courteeners/Cribs/Pigeon Detectives/Whip/Charlies/Ladytron at the moment. As long as I can put it on shuffle, which is how I usually run funnily enough.

I don't know if they still have them, but iTunes used to have playlists that they did for working out...

I'm not saying that you have to download them from iTunes...but you might be able to get a good idea...

Actually, wasn't LCD's "45:33" purposely aimed at runners?

Bit of a strange tempo though, doesn't ever really get going (from memory, not listened to it in ages).

If you're cycling, Tour de France

Been a runner for years (was actually nationally rank at one point in time).

Suggest NO's Substance. Has a great beat, but also has a calming rhythm. I used this before every race in High School and college.

REM's Out of Time is also very good.

The key is to find music with a good feet or breathing pattern to it, while also having a calming rhythm to it.

If you need help with a runjing schedule, message me. I coached for years.

thank you. i'll give some of those a whirl. i reckon 'eye of the tiger' is going to have to feature at some point too. is that the kind of admission that'll have me taken round the back and shot?

right now the backs of my thighs feel like they've been walloped repeatedly with a cricket bat anyway.

Don't misquote, Jeff... He actually said he was nationally rank... And as an American that must be pretty bad...

My only advice is stick with it. I did the Great North Run 3 years ago. At the start of my training, 6 months before, I felt like I'd never get fit. The first 2 weeks were hell, I couldn't master my breathing at all.

After that it got a lot easier. I found myself running my usual 4 mile course and feeling I could easily do another lap. By the time I did the race I'd never felt better and did it in a pretty respectable time, only stopping once.

I want to get back to feeling like that, I'm part way there. My mate is running the London Marathon on Sunday - now that is amazing!!

when i was a rower in college, we used to run the loop in central park (about 7 miles) during the winter. you could tell that you'd hit the upper east side when you started passing women running in fur coats. no kidding!

From today's Guardian:

Music can distract us from the monotony and discomfort of exercise - and the tempo can push us to work harder, too. Sam Murphy meets a man who has created a half-marathon with its own playlist

For You Sun Readers That Missed It

edit: Don't forget to scream "An end to this poncery" at the top of your voice to get that extra push for the finish line
