You've got the conversion wrong. Its roughly $2 to £1. Mainly because the people in charge of managing the dollar are so ungodly shit at their jobs.
It's all done with cameras and a big fcuk off computer.
The cameras see your registration plate and the computer checks that you've paid for that day.
Londoners slag it off but it has made a difference. When I lived in London you simply couldn't drive anywhere. Now you can get around and the air is cleaner. Catching cabs is now a viable way of getting around.

In UK its currently £1.17 a litre of diesel.

As a concept yes. Driven to perfection by his predecessors. I don't think you can blame Mr Major for the levels it's reached now. I reckon there is a Govt department for Inventing New Stealth Taxes. Such as the smoking licence, Nick.

The bad news is that the smoking ban is reducing the tax that the government gets from drinks in pubs and fags in general.
Fuel will have to go up again to compensate.

They're a luxury item and so cheap that noone would notice or care if there was a 40% nut tax.
50% on dry roasted and 60% on Nobbys.
And people are eating more nuts in pubs cos they can't smoke fags. Fact.

Yup, I'd always wondered if anybody had contemplated that when introducing the recent ban...
This country (and probably most other countries) hates increases in Income Tax (sure Election loss), thus Indirect Taxes are the main alternative source of income to the government (VAT, Alcohol/Cigarettes/Fuel/etc)...
If less people smoke/drink, then fuel is the one to go up instead...
Of course, the green excuse helps... :)

Hey, just cos a bunch of self-serving dweebs talk shit about it to get the chat-show dollar, doesn't mean I don't think cleaner is better. Why ANYONE would WANT to drive on those roads is a mystery. Remember, UK cities are not laid out like SimCity, they have corners and awkward bits, so traffic is always gnarled up. I've been in Downtown Chicago on a Saturday afternoon, and it was NOTHING to London (or even Belfast) on a typical week day.
Having a car means you're too pigshit lazy to walk the 50 yards to the tube.
The other side of it is, that you could say the Govt are saying it's oK to pollute as long as you're rich.
That and the fact that your road tax entitles you to drive on all ublic roads, so the charge is possibly illegal, or fraudulent.
EDIT:finally heard someone tell the truth on the BBC the other day, on a show called "Earth the power of the planet". the guy said "having no ice is nothing at all new for the Earth, and not in the least unnatural or a disaster, but it'll be the first time it's been that way while we;ve been around so itll make our lives hard".

Recycled paper produces something like 5-10 times the filth of new stuff, and nobody plants any trees when they are using recycled, whereas logger kinda half to plant new ones as they go. BTW, growing trees breath 10 times the CO2 of mature ones, so planting new trees is good.

Yup, but only if you're travelling within the EU - if it's outside the EU, then you're only allowed 200 (although I tend to bring a bit more than that, but break open the cartons - customs officials only tend to stop people who bring in full cartons - i.e. they're easier to sell! :p ).

I agree. My major is Geology (should be graduating in the summer), and a large part has to do with enviromental crap.... plus I worked as the EPA rep on base for almost 2 years. The real interesting thing is that, while the news, movies, etc. aren't stating false information, they always state incomplete information; which leads to misunderstanding (which of course IS planned).
The biggest thing never mentioned is that Climantology is a brand new science. Only started a little over 50 years ago.... and the information that was started 50 years ago is limited, most of it has been within the last 20. Alot of the scares are hypothesis' that scientists jumped to conclusions about in the late 60's-early 70's, and its hard to defunk old scares in the population. in the end, we really know little of the how the climate is exactly controlled by sinks and sources.

I cannot find the report, but these figures are the mix of the three main taxes (incomes, industries and cannot remember the third...)
I do not have a diesel, but I know that the litre is more than 1€ by now. How exactly, I do not know. I do not drive a lot, so I cannot tell you how much is a litre of Sans Plomb 95. All I know is that my tank is 40L and I pay almost 60€ by supermarkets gas stations. Before the invasion of Irak, my tank was full to the teeth with 45€ in a top class gas station. Who said it would cost cheaper by the time?
People also talked cigarettes : 20 blue Rothmans are 5€.

We can only bring back 1,000 cigarettes per private vehicle. Also 1,000 per person by public transports. That is within old EU members.

Actually Steve, that's the only thing I'd challenge you on...
You need to clean fish ponds once a year or so - you get rid of around half the algae clinging to the pond liner, or it does take over.
You need to keep some of it as it's beneficial to the mini-ecosystem, but too much of a good thing... the fish suffocate.
Ponds need a good clean every now and then, removing dead leaves, fish poo and other nitrogenous waste, otherwise the water isn't properly oxygenated - the nitrogen levels overcome and kill them - I know, I've had dead fish and frogs burst in my face (literally).
A good filter system also helps aeration and replenishes the oxygen in the water, essential for the survival of the fish, newts and (sometimes) hibernating frogs.
Algae are good, but too many are bad.
