I went to Bali in 1998. Great f'ing place. I always wanted to go to a Pacific Island. Went there when I was stationed in Japan, flight only cost $125 then.

The dollar (so the pound extra) went really far. I don't remember the exact cost, but it was somewhere around $250 for entire week to drink, eat steaks, and stay up in 5 star hotels.... unbelievably cheap.

by the way, if you have a board, bring it with you.... great waves and the surfing was awesome!

I made a mistake, my Dad was in Goa.

He said it was full of hippies, but he enjoyed it. Everything was dead cheap there, too. He bought my Mum a nice watch from the Duty Free. We're dead generous in our family.

Here's a hint. don't advertise your country as a Western brothel, if a substantial part of your population has serious objections to that.

I've been twice (2001 and 2006) and i love it! stayed in a place called Sanur wich is on the east-side of the island. nice and a bit more quiet village, good and plenty of places to get good (sea)food and bali-hay (indonesian beer). great beaches, good scuba-diving spots there (although the best ones are more up north). It's about an half an hour drive from Kuta which is packed with surf's-up hang-loose aussies and japanese tourists...i hated Kuta, to crowded, to busy to noisy and way to touristic...But if you wanna hang out @ steakhouses, sportbars, casino's and the KFC this is ur spot...

otherwise check out the Sanur beach hotel in Sanur...best fucking hotel i have been to on the island!

Thanks for that, is it easy to get to Java ( Borobodour ) from where you stayed?

From where i stayed Java is not really around the corner. I know there are ferries going to Java from the west-side of Bali. But, as said that's quite far from Sanur and/or Kuta. I have seen trips to Java being offered on Bali so maybe it's a good thing to check it out while on Bali or check with some travel-agency on forehand...

you can say that again.....

I went there in 1994. Stayed in Sanur which was perfect,not too busy but enough nightlife to make it interesting.

Beware the hawkers. Although friendly enough they can be a bloody pain in the arse.

Ubud and mount Batur are well worth a visit (spend a few quid and hire a taxi for the day).

Tourism in parts of Bali has reached saturation point. Better to go elsewhere in the archipelago

yep. been on all of them...and the west bank/gaza strip/golan heights (where i was shot at by hizballah), belfast, and egypt)! no terrorism on the trains in madrid...although there was a major ETA bombing a block from where i was staying. shook the plaster off the wall.

For me, "Pacific Island" means "South Pacific island"-- Tahiti, Bora Bora, and the like.

Although arguably, when you were stationed in Japan, you were stationed on a "Pacific Island."

Anyway, regardless of which ocean-- or oceans-- surround Bali, it looks like a beautiful island to visit.
