I think YMO are right up there with Kraftwerk in terms of "legends" in electronic music..I've never seen them live but they are playing Royal Festival Hall June 15 as part of the Meltdown Festival (curated by Massive Attack)

So, who's up for catching a rare live appearance??

Berlimey, there's loadsastuff I wanna see there - Massive Attack themselves, YMO, Tom Tom Club, Grace Jones!

Blade Runner soundtrack mixed by Massive Attack might be interesting too.

Am sure a few people here would wanna see Gong too!

I will definitely go and see YMO...

Never thought I'd have the pleasure of going to see them live - wonder if Ryuichi Sakamato's going to be there with them?

Wow...

That seems interesting. Never had a chance to see them live, as they don't tour as much as they used to, and they initially stopped making music as early as 1983, and then reforming a few times.

They were featured in a Japanese beer advertisement early last year-----

:read:

I like a lot of their music, though, notably the songs Rydeen, Key, Solid State Survivor, Citizens of Science, Ballet, La Femme Chinoise, Technopolis

I'm not that interested in Ryuichi Sakamoto's solo works, though, but I'll admit he's a decent musician.

Yup, and they released an updated version of Rydeen as a single (using the name HASYMO, as I think that "Rescue" was used in a computer game?).

Damn fine band - and one that I've always wanted to go and see live! :thumb:

From the Guardian:

Yellow Magic Orchestra

Featuring revered musician Ryuichi Sakamoto, YMO pioneered electro-pop in Seventies Japan.

Hmm, bit ambiguous that.

Cool - sounds like it'll be Ryuichi, Haroumi Hosono, and Yukihiro Takahashi (fingers crossed)!

Yes, I believe you're right. When I first heard their name, HASYMO, I thought what the hell of a name is that?

But then, I thought, 'has YMO'? The updated version of Rydeen was also a good song, with a different atmosphere than the original version. :thumb:

Well, I decided to go for the membership option (which I should be able to use at other times during the year), so I can buy some tickets from Thursday... :)

As for what I'll be going to see: YMO and Vangelis (mixed by Massive Attack) for definite, and (possibly) Gong...

Gonna be a busy week!

Only ltd tickets released today - many more on sale tomorrow.

Go here - http://thepiratebay.org/tor/4105540/Yellow_Magic_Orchestra_(1978-2007_23_Albums).

That torrent's got 23 albums! (Half of which are compilations or live though). I've got all the studio albums on the iPod.

They can be cheesy as fcuk in places but do deserve the tag 'Japanese Kraftwerk'!

Grace Jones is gonna be SIXTY just before that gig! :eek3:

Finally (via phone) managed to grab tickets for:

Massive Attack (Sat 14th) YMO (Sun 15th) Bladerunner vs Massive Attack (Tues 17th)

Bearing in mind that I'll probably need to be in Telford that week, I can't book for Grace Jones, as I'll need to travel up on the Wednesday... :(

Still, a good set of gigs :thumb:

YMO classic songs include Rydeen, Behind The Mask, Tong Poo, Computer Game, La Femme Chinoise, Firecracker plus more...

I first got into them because there was a remix album (Hi-Tech/No Crime) released back in 1992 featuring remixes by The Orb, Orbital, 808 State, The Shamen, LFO, and Altern8, then progressed onto a box set (Techno Bible - 5xCD's)... The bug continued from there! :)

Can't believe some of this stuff was released back in 1978/79...
