Anyone on here taken the plunge and bought it yet? If so, does it live up to the hype?

Even though I'm slightly pissed off it won't be out for the PC for quite some time (6+ months) I am quite tempted to drop £325 on a PS3 bundle now and write off my free time this weekend.

You do get the Blu-ray DVD player built in I spose

Why a PS3 and not a 360? Doesn't the 360 do bluray?

Nope, it doesn't do Blu-ray.

It has (or had) an add-on for HD-DVD which recently lost the format er, struggle.

I have heard that the latest Grand Tourismo is a blinding game, even in it's minor 'Prequel' format.

So that's three reasons to get one.

OK, sorted.

Colin can give me the money and I'll go and buy one :thumb:

Not much of a fan of GTA. When you drive, the car physics is shit. Good graphics on a console? Hmmmm I thought they were designed for TV's? Therefor ultralow resolution.

Now if you want gorgeous graphics, you want Half-Life2 or Crysis at 1680x1050x32bit with 16QxFullscreen AntiAliasing and 16xaniostropic filtering. Albeit running crysis at those specs is still kinda impossible, but you can get HL2-ep2 doing 60fps flat the whole way through on those settings, delicious.

Thats all very well and good, if totally irrelevant, especially when all you want to do is go and kill lots of people.

I am going to buy an X BOX 360 just to play this game. My logic for this is I cant play my ps2 games on a Ps3 apparently.

I'm not a fan of GTA. The moral boundries this crosses is just wrong. I tried playing it, but once you have shot at and been shot at in real life... it changes yer perspectives on things. Won't play it, really wish it wasn't on the market... can't be good for society as a whole.

I thought it was funny and silly when I last played it much (vice city I think), but it just didn't really engage me as a game anyway. But I do worry listening to some people talk about it. Then again, they're the same folks who think your old job is "cool" and that it's all a big laugh risking your life to defend your country (notwithstanding that I believe these days the US forces protect some tossers bank balance not the people).

I was wondering what your opinion of War games is. Things like Medal of Honour, Call of Duty, Battlefield. Particularly, have you played America's Army? It's downloadable as a liveCD, and seems really REALLY serious, there's even actual US-Army involvement (hence the Linux base, would YOU ride into battle on anything with windows at the helm  ).

Wasnt someone stabbed or shot, by a mysterious hoodie (or something) in Croydon overnight, whilst queueing outside HMV for the release of this?

I'm sure i heard it on the radio (or something).

IF that's true I don't blame you. That's just nasty. Always been more into computer games than consoles, more than anything for the better control....a keyboard and mouse player will always masacre one with a dual-pad, never mind the state of most console steering wheels.

For randonm slaugher on the PC, you still can't beat the Quake/Doom/Unreal-Tourney games.

I only brought prettiness into it because "good graphics" on a console, are usually equivalent to the "very low" setting on PC games.

The only thing likely to drag me back to a console is Gran Turismo, but only if good wheels are available (come to think of it, I think my G25 works on Xbox and PS*). Graphics are average and the car phyics model has some really weird ideas, but there's just nothing like it for depth of gameplay and obsessive fiddling on the PC.

Yes.. you are right. I think I read about a chainsaw massacre occurring in an overnight queue outside a bakers, eagerly anticipating the release of a new pumpkin seed bloomer.

Bread is dangerous business.

It is a well known fact that 99% of murderers are bread users.

I think you're missing the point of the GTA series just a tad.

They're not designed to be lifelike simulators requiring two incredibly expensive graphics cards working in tandem to run. They're tongue in cheek black comedies about being becoming a criminal mastermind in a total fantasy world; decent storylines, decent soundtrack and some genuinely funny dialogue

As much as I love HL2 I have spent more hours on GTA; it's a right old laugh by comparison. I haven't tried Crysis yet but from the screenshots and reviews I've seen it does seem to be quite a soulless game by comparison I.e. just eye candy. My PC probably wouldn't run it well right now either without an extra £300-400 thrown at it.

GTAIII, Vice City and San Andreas on the PC? Proper fun

I know to many my stance may seem completely contradictory to what they would expect, but I really don't like games where they trivialize life. Where the fun is in killing people. Killing people shouldn't be fun, and putting the two together (killing; fun) is dangerous.

I had some that joined the Marine Corps with the ideas that you mentioned, that 'killing is cool'... but you'd probably be suprised that is a very small number. The ones that came in with that attitude either changed it real quick, or were problems and always getting into trouble (many get kicked out).

I'm on the fence on war games though. I think it really depends on the overall message given. Does the game give a sense of danger, loss of comrade, and the difficulty of killing and the realness of being killed -or- are you allowed to get hit 300 times and trivializes the loss of others around you?

I think with GTA, if I played before going over to Iraq, I would have enjoyed it... but now it's just disturbing to me. I haven't tried to play any realistic war games since going over. Never thought about it before, but I guess I've been avoiding them. Not sure if I could play them. I had enough of shooting and being shot at... GTA sparked old memories and couldn't sleep for a week, not sure I want to try another game like that for awhile.:\ohwell:

I pretty much guessed that would be your exact attitude. When real lead's been flying past your real head, it takes the shine off. call of Duty 4 has scenes which are clearly meant to be Iraq, and they don't half convey the disorientation and confusion of that kind of combat, half an hour's all a pussy like me can take, reckon 30 seconds would be optimistic in the real world though, I'd be shellshock boy in no time.

Mind you I thought the Tactical Ops levels set in Belfast and Crossmaglen were hilarious, mainly since it didn't specify which bunch of terrorist spastics you were shooting, so I could just pretend it was both lots.

You should take a wee look online at America's Army, you have to do boot camp and all (think it's USMC but don't quote me), before you're allowed to join up online. Weapons are very realistic, not sure about the combat element as I never made it that far, cos basically........

I stank at it.

Yeah, it's nice that the U.S. Army uses a first-person shooter as a recruitment tool. Surely that sends our high schoolers the right message?

I've played the Recon sometime back and I think it is an acceptable game. It is more on training to work together as a fireteam, rather than killing people. If one of your own men is killed your game is over. It is based more on real life, and in a way it gives someone who is thinking of joining a more realistic veiw of what to expect. Don't think it is a bad idea. It doesn't trivialize life.

On a funny side note, when I was in, all NCOs were given a version of the game that was made special for Marine leaders. It had one or more of your members high or drunk on some kind of drug. You not only had to direct a fire fight, but find the one that was intoxicated, figure out which drug he used and nullify the situation before he got himself or someone else killed... it really was a bit funny to play.

CoD 4 seems to have a certain amount realism. Mind you, the only time I've been shot at is being peppered by buckshot on a dove hunt. But...

on some of the more advanced levels (whether fighting Eastern Euros or persons who may or may not be of Middle Eastern descent  ) the combat is what I would describe as "hairy".

My favorite part of the game is when you're the weapons operator on the AC-130. I like using the 40mm Bofors. It's just the right combination of rate of fire and blast radius.

Surely a lot of these games (perhaps Call of Duty excepted, but including the GTA games) aren't about 'killing' except in the most cartoonish Tom and Jerry kind of way? Serious Sam, for example I remember featuring characters with smoking cartoon bombs in place of heads who'd run at you and explode.

Interesting that in that game Edelbrock mentions 'you lose one of your men and the game is over'. That's not quite how it works in reality though is it? Or we'd not still be in Iraq.

The GTA games do seem to go out of their way to appear more offensive than they actually are though. From what I've seen of them they are actually harmless cartoons, but Rockstar games seems to make a point of delierately putting controversial and tasteless elements in to them so they get lots of free publicity from the Daily Mail and Richard and Judy (use a prostitute to regain health? hmmmm).

I don't know why, but games based on WW2 seem acceptable to me, but I don't like the idea of games based on any more recent conflict, especially anything that's still going on now. Dunno why, totally illogical really.

 Not quite what I meant. What I meant was that if the game is over when your team member dies, it gives a sense of loss of life for those around you... The reality aspect is that you can give orders, but like inthe game, sometimes the men will do something you didn't intend to do and gets them in trouble... and there are many facets to attacking something, rather than the one-man-army games that are completely unrealistic.

and you are right though on the odd feeling on games on older wars and current ones... kinda the same for movies with me. I don't mind watching war movies based on old wars, but not too ready to rent movies on Iraq... probably makes more sense on my end, but still it is a bit silly

on the cartoon sense, things like Halo and unrealistic charactors don't bother me, its when it is killing human life for fun... especially in GTA which has you shooting and driving over people that are identifiable in normal society. Its disturbing... but then, like I said before, getting shot at and shooting back... doing it in real life changes yer perspective on things...

Killing people shouldn't be glamourized
