Surely a lot of these games (perhaps Call of Duty excepted, but including the GTA games) aren't about 'killing' except in the most cartoonish Tom and Jerry kind of way? Serious Sam, for example I remember featuring characters with smoking cartoon bombs in place of heads who'd run at you and explode.
Interesting that in that game Edelbrock mentions 'you lose one of your men and the game is over'. That's not quite how it works in reality though is it? Or we'd not still be in Iraq.
The GTA games do seem to go out of their way to appear more offensive than they actually are though. From what I've seen of them they are actually harmless cartoons, but Rockstar games seems to make a point of delierately putting controversial and tasteless elements in to them so they get lots of free publicity from the Daily Mail and Richard and Judy (use a prostitute to regain health? hmmmm).
I don't know why, but games based on WW2 seem acceptable to me, but I don't like the idea of games based on any more recent conflict, especially anything that's still going on now. Dunno why, totally illogical really.
Not quite what I meant. What I meant was that if the game is over when your team member dies, it gives a sense of loss of life for those around you...
The reality aspect is that you can give orders, but like inthe game, sometimes the men will do something you didn't intend to do and gets them in trouble... and there are many facets to attacking something, rather than the one-man-army games that are completely unrealistic.
and you are right though on the odd feeling on games on older wars and current ones... kinda the same for movies with me. I don't mind watching war movies based on old wars, but not too ready to rent movies on Iraq... probably makes more sense on my end, but still it is a bit silly
on the cartoon sense, things like Halo and unrealistic charactors don't bother me, its when it is killing human life for fun... especially in GTA which has you shooting and driving over people that are identifiable in normal society. Its disturbing... but then, like I said before, getting shot at and shooting back... doing it in real life changes yer perspective on things...
Killing people shouldn't be glamourized
