favourite musical

some people touched on this in the best soundtrack thread.

oliver! is my clear favourite. i saw it in the west end; we had 2nd row seats and i was spat on by fagin (jonathan pryce). i dig the artful dodger (the character, not the bo selecta! twats).

and: annie. when the film came out i had an annie perm, the annie dress, socks with annie decals, and i would sing along to the soundtrack, pretending i was an orphan. this did not please my parents. apparently when i first saw it onstage in 1980 i was so transfixed to the stage my parents couldn't get my attention.

wow. annie is great.

annie IS great. last year i forced my sons to watch it with me - great big guitar-playing skateboarding near-teenagers who were FUMING with the humiliation and injustice. by the end they were calling "run annie!" at the screen, and firstborn was almost in tears.

i do sometimes worry what i'm doing to them. maybe i should take them out to play with airguns and worms.

sound of music for me though. the sweeping panorama and the swell of the orchestra at the very start. good, that.

The Sound of Music is the only time when I wished the Nazis had won and finished off that horrible family. I think I actually own a copy of this as well.

Don't get me wrong I do enjoy the odd musical and do have a number on dvd. At last look I still was hetro.

I still have to say The Phantom of the Opera is my fav. I still rate West Side Story, which is first saw more 3/4 of a life time ago, and Camelot as well.

Watching a bunch of people dressing up like it on stage and reacting it while its playing on screen... its the lyrics I can't accpet, makes me want to loose my cookies...

careful! my cousin is married to the son of one of the von trapp children (the younger son--called friedrich (i think) in the musical--real name werner). however, it takes GREAT liberties with the actual story. in real life, maria was the authoritarian, scary one (i only met her when i was a baby, though) and georg was a kind, quiet man.

there was a great ralph moment in doctor who a couple of weeks ago when the doctor and donna were trying to persuade a young woman not to turn them in as they were hiding/escaping from the baddies - she hesitated for a moment and then shouted 'they're here!' the dialogue and staging was almost an exact rip off.

i laughed and laughed and laughed. thus proving what a big geek i am.

Can't think of _any_ musicals I like. Though I loved Bugsy Malone when I saw it as a kid. Did anyone see that where-are-they-now documentary where it turned out the kid who played 'Fat Sam' now worked in the 'waste disposal business' in Brooklyn and bore a worrying resemblance to Tony Soprano?

Did 'Joy Division the musical' ever get off the ground?

As unlikely as that was I reckon it was more do-able than 'Cocteau Twins the musical'.
