Depends on the source. I can say The Independent is pretty reliable, and regarded as a serious newspaper, not a tabloid.
Personally I'm a bit concerned that the US hasnt learnt from its last attempts at imperialism.

Well, it's not like it wont be apparent if it's a lie, there will be a distinct lack of US tanks to prove it.

BTW...something just occured to me....why is everything the USArmy uses designated M1? (it's a tank, a gun, an at least 7 other things I've seen)

Well first off, I don't doubt the desire to have permanent bases in Iraq. I think that was a plan all along (I think I mentioned this when I first came to NOOL).
However, the article is very slanted and tries to up the shock value. The idea that US soldiers would be stationed there, not following Iraqi law, being able to rape, pillage, and kill anyone they want with the Iraqis having no legal recourse really is a silly notion.
Also, the idea that Bush is going to officially end the war to set up permanent bases is far cry as well. Permanent bases mean bringing families in to live as well. If a wife or child were killed image the press of the event... permanent bases might be on the table of negotiation, but they aren't opening tommorrow.

Court Martials are still going on for Haditha, and Blackwater isn't part of the military, so has NOTHING to do with anyone staying on permanent bases. And there already have been convictions through court martials:

These are just a few that I know of....
and this is in a "war" enviroment where somethings are deemed more acceptable. If there are bases and violent action lessens to a great extent, any irregular action will be prosocuted harshly....

Turkey is in NATO. USA want them to be part of EU. Europeans don't. Turkey has a common border with Iraq. US troops will stay there. Will Iraq be in NATO? Will the USA want Iraq to be in EU?

Depends if you saw the Bear as a threat. Depends if you see Iraq etc as a threat. Sometimes it's easier to fashion them into a threat by media and fear, and in the same instance the perceived threat starts arming itself even more to the hilt, and evolves into what it was originally hyped up to be. Basically how to make a mountain out of a molehill.
