Prefab Sprout – rediscovered

Last week I came across a copy of the Prefab Sprout compilation CD The Best Of Prefab Sprout: A Life Of Surprises at the charity shop where I work, and bought it in curiosity rather than expectation.

My impression on this band prior to listening to this brilliant compilation wasn’t great, as the British radio stations only seem to play The King Of Rock n Roll and Cars And Girls. On it you can hear the sentimental Hey Manhattan!, the title track A Life Of Surprises, but best of all are two tracks both produced by Stephen Lipson: The Sound Of Crying and If You Don’t Love Me.

I remember liking Prefab Sprout, but haven't thought of them in a while. Thanks, I'll check out the link when I get home.

OK, I like If You Don’t Love Me a lot. Is that their own song, or a cover of someone else's song?

Good pop band, always liked em mesel, Paddy Mac lives up the way in one of the pit villages outside of Durham- semi-recluse now. Re-released Steve McQueen out last year. Remember going to get an album of theirs signed in HMV on the afternoon before going on to the tyne-tees gaff as New Order were shooting the Tube (Spring 86' yellow jumper show)later in day

The Sound of Crying is really nice too!

sprouts are still one of my favourite bands. steve mcqueen is one of the best albums ever. the re-release had some lovely pared down acoustic versions too. paddy could be a little over-wraught and muso-ish but it's all still very listenable and he has a marvellous way with quotable couplets. "when love breaks down we join the wrecks, who leave their hearts for easy sex" "if I'm troubled by every folding of your skirt, am I guilty of every male inflicted hurt? but I don't know how to describe the Modern Rose, when I can't refer to her shape against her clothes" "you and I won't lose our heads the way some lovers do, saying "This will last forever" when it's just a year or two." Prefab Sprout are an English pop band from Witton Gilbert, County Durham...

The last time i saw Prefab sprout Paddy Macaloon had long grey hair and an even longer full grey beard. He looked like a cross between Jerry Garcia and a Quaker.

He had to remind the crowd to stop smoking during their set as it was affecting his voice. He's a bit of an oddball but wrote some great songs.

Actually, I thought they sounded like Pet Shop Boys, at least in The Sound of Crying.
