I take it by "built in mouse", you mean the synaptic touchpad?
They're fucking awful in windows, and do very little by default.
The X-server in Linux makes much better use of them (and somehow makes them just work better, can't see why though), lets you use one side of it as a scroll wheel, and can tell how many fingers you're using ( just like a young lady), and acts differently as a result.
Laptops can be quite slow because of the slower (4800-5200rpm, vs 7200rpm) hard discs. Mine, while being perfectly lovely to use in Linux, is really REALLY painfully slow in windows. Despite my predeliction for disliking windows, this disparity surprises even me....I expect el-pingu to be a BIT quicker, not embarrassingly so like this. Mine has a "vista read" sticker. LOL, like FUCK! If it chokes on XP, you'll need a calander to measure it's boot-time in Pishta.
Nuts, if yours is vista, I'd recommend you TRY and get XP on it for a less irritating experience. Trouble is you need to be a black belt geek to install windows successfully on a laptop, doubly so if all they gave you in terms of driver discs is a system restore disc or two.
Otherwise.....Ubuntu, fuckard proof (does REALLY well in Jesusland), lightning fast (installs faster than vista BOOTS), and will handle most of your usual functions quite well. Will do web, mail, music, video/dvd, the lot. Will even run a few windows proggies using WINE (another lovely 'nix acronym...Wine stands for, Wine Is Not an Emulator). Will NOT.....run windows games or catch viri/malware. Wireless can be a bigger dickpain than in windows too.
PS: I named mine Orac....did you change the name on yours?
PPS: get yer arse up to asda and get a Trust retractable USB mouse....makes life easier if you're stuck in DOS with a laptop and can't deal with the touchpad.
It's not a nipple in the middle of the keyboard is it? LOL....if so.....LOL...LOL.....LOL.....buy a mouse.
Don't want it is with all the Vista bashing........ I have used it perfectly over the ;ast year with no problems at all.

I use it too, for the three games that use DX10.
Takes too long to do anything having to tell it "yes I AM FUCKING SURE" every time you move the mouse.
Performance in games/benchmarks is only very slightly lower than XP, which is impressive.
But this is on a 3.5GHz Quad Core with DDR3 1600 memory. Not a lappy that can barely do XP. What do you think that slow hard disc will be like when Vista starts "worrying" at it for no reason, the machine will be SOOooooo slow.
Like I said, the performance is only slightly lower. Lower=dowgrade. You do not pay for downgrades You pay for UPgrades to make the machine go FASTER Not SLOWER.
The "beast" is on pishta Doc.
Tis a bit slow on startup, but it came pre-installed with norton so that is going to have to go!
Cant really comment on pishta as i was only on it for an hour yesterday.
got misel a wireless mouse, cos this ones wank!

If you have Vista are going to partition make sure to put at least 40 gb on the operating system partition... I thought 20 gb would be plenty, but I'm dow to only 1 gb left... add another progrma and I'm screwed... actually can't update the 'service pack 1' since its 4gb in size... guess I'm going to have to reformat the whole damn computer

feckin useful for finding where the hell all your disc space is. Like finding out that Supreme Commander saves are 400-700MB! Or that when you ran bootvis, tracelog got jammed on for life.
whore runs just fine on windows 2000. thank you very much. i liked windowsxp. prob not much difference between all of them except every new os that comes out gets worse function wise.
whore gets angry and starts blinking like a cop light, making constipated noises at shut down. sounds like a plane sputtering out over the mountains. imagine a cessna with whore in big letters on the side lighting up pimp mountain.

I know what the issue is, just don't think I can change it though. I used to have my one partition with ONLY the operating system on the C-drive and everything else on another, just in case the operating system crashed I didn't have to reinstall everything.
BUT, Vista is a f-ed up program that REQUIRES that all your programs are put on the C-drive. It will actually DO IT ITSELF IF ITS NOT ON THE C-DRIVE! I downloaded all my programs on my d-drive and mysteriously they would disappear from the d-drive and show up on the c-drive!!!![]()
So for that reason, the c-drive needs to be alot larger...
Interestingly enough, I seem to be able to cut/paste programs back into the d-drive and somehow I can use the old desktop shortcut (to the c-drive) and somehow Vista will still open the program and move it back on the c-drive!![]()
What I need to be able to do is to move space from my d-drive over to the c-drive... but the only way I seem to be able to do that is by scrubbing everything back over to start![]()

Seen the "magnetic C: drive" trick myself, seemed to do it only after I had created/formatted a new D: or E: or whatever. Stuff I copied to the other drive, wouldn't be there, but instead on c:
Coupla reboots, dragged the stuff where it belonged, sorted.
Same pigshit lazy backup plan as me then :D
I'd rather drink cold dog vomit than install windos. Not only does it take 90 minutes to do what a Linux livecd does in 90seconds (better too), but it then takes fucking DAYS to hunt down and kill all the shite that gets on your tits.
It may take a day to install Gentoo, but at least my /home has all my settings and mail and whatnot in it.

Not without risking friction burns, no.

Talked to Microsoft support and they told me Vista is designed this way and there is no way around it... ![]()
Do you know of anyway to move space to the c-drive other than rebooting? Just as you mentioned, it'll take forever for me to get everything back to the way I liked it (especially because I turned off so may things in Vista to make it run better and I don't remember all that I did):(
