speaking as a tech sales guy....
Circuit City about two years ago (?) laid off their 3500 most experienced computer sales people to save money etc. The first quarter after that the tech sales went down almost 6%
The bean counters rule...so these services are nirvana-pure profit. I work at Office Depot and we are rolling our version of those services.
ok big secret-most of the computers and office multifunction printers are sold with a narrow profit margin-maybe even a loss. So plans/services, inks, cables are pushed to make the $$$.
I go to other places (Best Buy, Circuit City) to observe and man, customer service is paid lip service. It is just sales. We are meant to empty our wallets. I don't always hear product knowledge I hear sales spiel. They know the corporate line, but I asked more than one sales guy "what do you think?" and I get a restating of the sales pitch.
