How the fuck does that work?

Only three of each team finished?

What was all that poncing about the other day when the Brit cyclist had to follow the Chinese rider up down and around the track for for a few laps really REALLY slowly before he decided fuck this i'm gonna overtake the cunt! ?

That laser racing is just a load of people in boats. How does anyone follow that?

Chaos.

The winning time is taken from the third man to cross the line so only three need to finish.

Same kind of rules apply in team triathlon and showjumping. Think it's so that the whole team isn't fucked if one member has a mechanical or some other problem but teams use it to allow one rider to do an extra hard turn at the front and then peel off.

I asume you've worked out why they keep flying up the track from the front and rejoin the back :skeptic:

It's all tactics. You don't want to sprint straight out the gate for two laps. It's easier to get the jump on your opponant on the second lap when you can see him in front of you so you try to stay behind. Riding slowly and Track standing are bloomin' hard and all part of the skill of riding a velodrome.

They do that in longer races too don't they.....sort of a staring contest of who's gonna sprint first, and if they do, have they enough energy to maintain that insane pace until the end? If you go too soon, you could be flagging just as the other boy's on his peak game.

Also, what's the effect of slipstream/tow like in a velodrome? I'd assume with the (relatively) low speeds that while the following rider gets a teensy bit less wind resistance, you will not see the sorts of weird shit you get in oval motorracing (and on VERY long straights in real racing)......Basically where the following vehicle actually starts to get "sucked" along by the leading, and the leading vehicle starts to go faster too......you end up, once a fair bit over 200MPH (it probably happens slower too, but the craziest examples I've seen of it were on the 2.5 miles superspeedways in the US where Champ cars can start sniffing round 240mph), with 2 cars, which more or less evenly share, the drag of about 1.8 (random but meaningful Dr generated number) cars. I had a large lecture in this subject from a mate who's a PHD in aerodynamics and CFD after watching Andretti Jnr and JPM OBLITERATE the rest of the field doing it at Michigan).

I'm sure I've heard them talking about the lead among teans changing in the tour de france so one can act as "windbreak" (hopefully in one sense only), sort of goose-flock style.

quite right steve, in a cross wind they'll ride in echelons - see the kraftwerk artwork for aerodynamik - so that only one of them takes the wind & take turns at the front

said the cycling was something i was looking forward to & they haven't disappointed

obliterated the field at the worlds earlier this year in the home track & now this.

the man mountain & cav are up in 1 hour, pembleton's in the semi's. take it you all saw the pic of her in the observer sports magazine a few months back on her bike, with "the new aero kit on"

edit: also gutted that they haven't got the kilo sprint in this one, as that's the real mchoys normal discipline, he;s done brilliantly to get golds in two new, to him, contests

you will often see them completely stop as well

The whole point of that kind of cycling is to minimise drag, so I'd guess the answer is 'none at all'.

Schumacher and Barachello used to team up down the straight at the Indy F1. Can't see any of today’s 'number two drivers' being as compliant as old Rubens was in those days.

It was most impressive to see Shumacher's car slow down as he hit the wall of drag when he broke out of Ruben's 'stream.

Whilst cyclists are trying to change the air around them as little as possible, a racing car is trying to use it to generate downforce (admittedly by default on the straights) by flinging as much of it as possible into the air. The rooster tail in the wet allows this to be seen very clearly. Sitting behind one must be like tailing a coach on the motorway; everything goes quiet and your foot moves an inch off the accelerator (or five thousandths in the case of an F1 car) to maintain the same speed.

That's what made the Andretti/Montoya thing so good.....they were in different teams....it was like "right let's waste these plebs and then we can sort the win out between us" :evil4: (monty usually won, because Andretti, unlike his dad, was born a septic, and therefor, naturally, cannot drive for shit).

When you look at the banking in a velodrome, vs the length/radius of the track, dontcha just think "no fuckin way!". They must be fuckin whorin' round some to climb those walls.

I didn't see one single laser beam, I'm writing to the BBC.

Well OBVIOUSLY Michael, that's because there was no smoke for the beams to reflect off into your eyes, like they use at Hawkwind gigs. Sheesh. The beeb will think you're a loony.

Yes i assumed it was something like that.It just seemed odd to go to the lengths of following the other rider up the bank of the track almost to standstill then back down to the inside again.Obviously the Chinese was trying to tempt him to try and overtake on the inside.

Oh and they're at it again , bbc1 now
