Alaska strikes me as the sort of place that produces people who's opinions on everything are based entirely on CNN, rather than direct personal experience.

I've never been to Alaska, so this is pure speculation.

That definately is one aspect of it, but such are the reasons for choosing VPs... what extra votes might they might bring in... for instance, Biden will help bring in the white blue collar workers Obama is having trouble with.
But she also does fit with McCain well in that she isn't a party loyalist, as she also has pissed off the Republican Party with some of her stances.

I think another aspect is that there hasn't been a president in 50 years that hasn't been a governor first. Senators usually don't play well, and we have two senators up for presidency... Obama picked another senator for VP, while McCain chose a governor, which in itself might actually help his ticket.

Wise choice i think for McCain in many aspects, but not sure how well the far-right is going to react to it... Rush will probably hate it, which is all the more reason for me to like it.....

Over here in Japan, the news talks about the US elections, but to us Japanese, McCain and his people seem extremely right wing. (By Japanese standards, that is. Not that our opinions matter, but it's funny how someone who's portrayed as only moderately right-wing in the US media comes across as extremely right wing by Japanese standards.)

Well, there are some right-wing politicians and people here, but they're just a tiny tiny minority. And we don't have insane people who deny or question evolution, nor is there any controversy over abortion or stem cell medical issues over here. There's no huge movement to legalise same-sex marriage, but you don't hear homophobic politicians getting obsessed about trying to prevent it from happening, either. We have a government owned health insurance system that covers everyone (not free, but fairly reasonable), and gun control is extremely strict. Not to mention, there's extremely little gun crime, and also violent crime rates are very low even for other weapons.

So, sometimes it's interesting seeing how things that aren't even political issues here in Japan (or in other countries, for that matter) pop up in regards to the US.

While some of your points are not entirely correct about Japan (though the health care is pretty good over there), I think the main issue that the US has versus other countries is the wide variety of cultures in our society. There is no main indiginious culture (and American Indian don't impact the US enough to count it) that really 'rules' the country. That being the case you have a bunch of people that view things completely different from each other and causes bickering over things that other countries just wouldn't do.

Do you really believe that political differences here are based on ethnicity, and that causes "bickering"? If so, how do you account for political differences in other countries?

Who ever said anything about ethnicity? I sure didn't. Cultural differences aren't always in the boundaries of ethnicity. People in the city have a different culture than those in the country. Prodestants have a different culture than Catholics. People on one coast have a different culture than those on another. That you think culture lies only in ethnicity really dissappoints me as I thought you were more understanding than that....
