Anyone in the New Orleans area?

I'm keeping those who stayed behind to weather out Gustav in my kind thoughts and prayers. Thankfully Gustav, Hurricane as it is, weakened to a Catagory 2 before making landfall this morning.
To be honest I was scared for them should Gustav stayed as a Catagory 5, which is no storm to fuck around with. I would know--I survived this storm when it hit. I was 8 at the time.
Hurricanes aren't much of a laughing matter, in any case. :\ohwell:

I wish this came along in a weeks time, then I could say "i teach this bullshit" alas not.
I will say this though: The concept of "godliness" or "a god" is man made. twas invented around 15000 years ago. Before that, people tended to worship the Sun.

I always found it funny how some people put sooo much time and effort to talk about the lack of an existence of God. I don't believe in trolls, pixies or such things, but I don't go out of my way to bug Lord of the Ring fans trying to debunk it all.
Seems more like a teenager trying to deny thier own parents existence... gives me a chuckle everytime someone puts so much effort in it

Personally, I find it nothing short of incredible the lengths normal rational people defend religion. for instance, I could make a ham sandwich, you can have all the faith in the world that its cheese and onion, but its still a ham sandwich.
take the Bible. I'd say quite a bit of it is true, albeit dressed up a bit. Its not wholly inconcievable that a bloke called Noah built some kind of raft and stuck a load of animals on it. But two of EVERY single species in the whole world? Bullshit. Think of all the undiscovered insects in the Amazon for start. and how on earth is going to have persuaded a pair of rhinos on there?
But the bullshit at the start? stuff which has scientifically been proven to be false? in the next chapter, is there any proof that God passed down two peices of stone with the Ten Commandments, or did Moses did make them himself? You see, some bloke called Moses probably did lead a load of Jews out of Egypt and into Israel (and thus disproving any claims the Palestinians were there first! 
) but did the Red Sea really part? Or did they just swim through it or walk around it?
But yet, there are people who take this, quite literally, as the truth. And people die in the name of it, and people kill in the name of it. And almost as stupid, people get elected because they believe in it.
Here is what I want to know. How many people pray every day? BILLIONS. How many of there prayers get answered? A few, but certainly not becuase of divine intervention.

I do want to help... so how does my talking to the deity in my head and begging for help for hurricane victims work? The deity hears every word I think and knows every word the hurricane victims think, the deity caused the hurricane and then saves people from getting killed. The deity is all knowing, all powerful, all merciful. So I can't beam any messages to the deity that it doesn't already know. So I beam a thought message that I want the deity to save the lives of people in the path of the hurricane (and this is different from symptoms of schizophrenia?... how?)... and then the deity will answer my prayer if I pray properly? And this makes me feel good too? Mmm endorphins from god...
If A, then B will C. If not A, then B will not C. Is this the logic of this praying, am I really this important in causing actions of the deity, lord of all time and space?
Maybe I should drive down, build a house for a victim, and bring some Krispy Kreme doughnuts. Maybe I can pray and get out of work and get free gasoline to go there and help.

I have been fascinated by religons and mythologies at an early age and have studied then extensively. Almost all are the same. There is a mixture of something greater at work than human-kind, usually a reward/punishment in the afterlife, and the most damning of all religons, a history of a peoples intertwined... usually given to extensive storytelling so to give impact of the event...
the first problem taken on both sides of this arguement is that both take the story telling on too much factual basis, which is completely off-base since we are judging it by today's standards of storytelling. Our society is factual based, in our news, history, and everything else. In the days of most of the world's religons, storytelling took on a different dimension. It was understood that (and I quote The Man who Shot Liberty Valance... and later 24PP) "When the legend becomes fact, print the legend". Thucydides tried to write a strictly factual basis of events of the Peloponnesian War and was mocked and told that his storytelling was utter crap... almost all his accounts were lost because it was despised so much. It just wasn't how it was done then.
So come back to your beefs with the Old Testament... your pulling out things that are not meant to be factual based and are based upon the history telling portion of the religon.
How about we hit a better portion, Jesus, Buddha, etc. lived a life that we should all strive to live similar to. Forget all the extra storytelling inbetween, and just limit it to what is important in it.

The location of New Orleans in a low lying area, close to a confluence of many rivers and exposed to one of the most hurrican prone stretches of water in the world, is unfortunate. What is more unfortunate however is that man chose to settle here.

Comparing religion(s) to a set of fantasty books is not a brilliant way to start your argument. Obivously, both are completely different in their origins, intentions and overall context within humanity. To be honest, it gives me a chuckle that you typed the above and seem to mean it.
I suppose the main difference which Liam has already pointed out is that LoTR fans - sad bastards as they may be - know it's a fabricated world which has no basis in reality. Religious nutters on the other hand are quite sure that everything handed down in their religion(s) is true, factual and irrefutable (see the Commander-in-chimp presently in charge of your country). They will defend it with violence and in some cases, their own lives.
It is my understanding - from a brief and harrowingly dull spell in Sunday School and High School R.E. - that most Christians believe God created the universe and absolutely everything known to man on Earth. This would by logical deduction make this hurricane his creation and the timing of it his choosing. So I fail to see why praying to him for the victims of the ensuing death and destruction is going to help. You could extend that simple argument to cancer, AIDS, "the devil" etc.

It's no secret that many people turn to religion because they simply can't fathom the randomness of life. It's easy to plonk the responsibility for everything to someone you can't see, hear or interact with. I prefer to think of it as a emotional crutch for some people which is harmless unless of course they start blow up tube trains or curtailing certain human rights.

I dont beleive god has the time of day to analysis everyones death as to whether they go to heaven or hell. We were probably created by an alien race.

Religon is designed for mass-consumption. Some of it was designed to show the proper life and way to live it and the other was to keep the masses in-line. The latter is the part everyone has problems with, and I agree for due reasons. Do many religons need to be scrubbed over and all the needless BS cleaned out of it, yes I would agree with that... but these parts shouldn't take away many of the good aspects of religons...
That some people take it too far by blowing things up and killing people in the name of religon is deplorable. People are sheep and will follow just about anything, if religon wasn't there for these idiots there would be something else in its place for them to run around like morons with bombs strapped to thier waists. It really isn't religon that is the problem, but that there is such a high percentage of people that are lemmings.
