I put 'other' cos at least 9 make me depressed; but on the whole, I agree with the above!
It's a combination of all the above plus money worries, weather, work stress, bad news, etc.
But suicidal people who take their kids with them really gets to me.
The fact that we havent had even a handful of sunny, warm dry days this summer. That at the same time as the gloomy economic news is most disheartening.

Yes, 'baby murder'. It's a phrase that's been used round here by at least one person who I'll give the benefit of the doubt to by not mentioning that his online name is Tex.

Tex, without wishing to devalue the life of a fetus, there's no such thing as an "unborn baby." There are babies, which exist only outside the womb, i.e., they have been born, and there are fetuses, which exist only inside the womb, i.e., they haven't been born. Your entire argument appears to be premised upon a non-existent, nonsensical entity-- the "unborn baby"-- that was created solely for rhetorical purposes. Had you instead said "fetus murder," you'd be far more accurate in your description of the life being ended.

No, but it is like one is in the womb, and one is born from the womb after it has developed within the womb.
Pretty basic, really.
Tex, and you, are the ones ignoring basic biology (no surprise there, that conservatives discard science when it doesn't fit their ideology) and using rhetoric in its place.

Nice use of a strawman. The rhetoric just never ends, does it?
I suppose it would depend on when that 10 seconds occurs. Wouldn't you? I.e., if that 10 seconds occurs in the first trimester, would you call what you so eloquently referred to as "passing the beef flaps" a baby? What about in the second trimester? The third?
Obviously (to anybody who doesn't live in Jesusland), the closer to 40 weeks the fetus is, the more developed it is, and thus, the more likely it is to survive.
And just as obviously (again, to anybody who doesn't live in Jesusland), the closer to conception the fetus is, the less developed it is, and thus, the less likely it is to survive.
If it's born, and survives, it's a baby. If it isn't born, it's a miscarried fetus, perhaps nothing more than a spot of protoplasm, or maybe something more developed, but not a baby. A baby, after all, is a human being at a certain stage of development, and if it hasn't yet reached that stage of development, it isn't a baby, any more than it is a toddler, or a teenager, or an adult.

My point on the science is that the development of a baby is not an exact science in vocabulary, where exactly something turns to something else is a fuzzy line. I t still feeds on her jugs for a wee bit longer... If it has to do with the ability of a baby able to survive on its own and not its mother then when is that? 15? Christ, you can mangle a sentence.

But the fact remains, the moment when a fetus becomes a baby is exact-- the moment a viable fetus "passes the beef flaps," it's a baby. Before that moment, it's a fetus.

ummmmm.... no not really...
Show me a definative definition from a reliable, unbiased source, because simply it isn't there. Some say life begins at conception, some at around the third week when the heart begines to beat, others around the second month when it can begins to feel, and yet others when it leaves the woman's womb... science is at war with it almost as much as the population, except many doctors are worried about legal reprucussions....

You're confusing the question of when life begins with the question of whether a fetus is a baby.
Not really, because you are trying to use the word 'fetus' as unliving and the word 'baby' as living because they don't have the same emotion behind them.... vocab and definitions are important here, and that is what is being discussed, as I stated before the vocabulary is not a complete science...
EdelBrock wrote: Not really, because you are trying to use the word 'fetus' as unliving
No, I'm not. In fact, I prefaced my original post on the subject with this disclaimer:
Comrade Shampanyov wrote: without wishing to devalue the life of a fetus
And that pretty much destroys your premise here. The confusion is in your mind, not in my choice of words.
EdelBrock wrote: and the word 'baby' as living because they don't have the same emotion behind them....
And now you've proved my point-- that Tex has substituted the word "baby" for "fetus" as a rhetorical technique, because, as you say, the word "fetus doesn't "have the same emotion."
EdelBrock wrote: vocab and definitions are important here, and that is what is being discussed, as I stated before the vocabulary is not a complete science...
Vocabulary isn't a science at all. It's a store of words at one's disposal.
The fact that you acknowledge that "vocab and definitions are important here" once again underscores my argument: Tex is substituting the word "baby" for "fetus" as a rhetorical technique, rather than as an expression of biological reality.
Comrade, make a choice then... is the fetus living? If so then abortion would be in the law books murder... vocab is very much a part of science, that you don't think so shows how distant you are from the scientific community... i'll give an example:
http://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Info/NACSN/05_1547.pdf
The Europeans have thier own as well. Granted this is for Geology, but it is designed specifically to make sure everyone is on the same page for definition in terms... I'm no medical expert, but if geologists have this, I have no doubt that medical professions have a similar thing as well...
EdelBrock wrote: Comrade, make a choice then... is the fetus living?
I've been pretty clear is saying that it is living. So why the confusion?
EdelBrock wrote: If so then abortion would be in the law books murder...
I think you mean "a living human being," don't you? And that is where the law struggles-- with the definition of a human being.
EdelBrock wrote: vocab is very much a part of science, that you don't think so shows how distant you are from the scientific community...
I haven't said science doesn't have a vocabulary. I said vocabulary isn't a science.

Yes, medical science does have a vocabulary. And I very much doubt that "fetus" and "baby" are inter-changeable terms in medical science.

There are babies, which exist only outside the womb, i.e., they have been born, and there are fetuses, which exist only inside the womb, i.e., they haven't been born. Your entire argument appears to be premised upon a non-existent, nonsensical entity-- the "unborn baby"-- that was created solely for rhetorical purposes. Had you instead said "fetus murder," you'd be far more accurate in your description of the life being ended.
You can engage in semantic gymnastics all you like. "Fetus" is a technical term for "unborn baby". Expectant mothers don't get asked how their "fetus" is doing. When mom and dad go for the sonogram to determine the sex of the unborn baby, they don't walk away from the doctors office saying, "We're having a feamle feuts!"
Based on your post, it would seem that we are in agreement that there is human life growing inside the womb of the mother. The question is, "What is our threshold for killing that life?"
I don't know how many people here have been to a neonatal unit at a hospital, but babies are now surviving outside the womb at 26 weeks. Once you see that child, you can't tell me it was a "fetus" one moment and a baby the next.
PS
As for words or phrases used for "rhetorical purposes", I can say the same about "fetus", "right to choose", "reproductive rights", etc.
the ever increasing world population. Is abortion really a bad thing? People and their idelogies...gawd.

Same for capital punishment, the death penalty actually helps decrease our footprint for global warming![]()

Not really "ideological" here, though, is it? More like some dumb fuck thinking (a) he could/should be able to decide what women do with their bodies and (b) the selfsame dumb fuck lacking the basic sensitivity to realise that that, simply by the law of averages, there must be quite a few posters on here who've had actually had abortions themselves and might - just might - be a little upset at being dubbed a "murderer".

reminds me of the Hypocrisy of the republican campaign. They whine when media focuses on the knocked up daughter, but they have no problem interfering with women's reproductive rights. I agree children should be of limits but the same goes with women's bodies.

... and the worst thing is, if I'm at the Dentists and it's there, I read it. Then feel dirty afterwards.
If your comments are directed at me, my past postings were only showing the hypocricy in Comrade's use of vocabulary. I don't think ALL abortions are out of line. For instance, my wife had to have two C-sections when having our children. She simply can not have another child, or she most likely will die in birth. In this instance, and many others where the mother's life is at stake, a woman has been raped, and many other such exceptions I have no issue with abortion... its just that this is not what the majority of abortions are about.
I do find it a bit perplexing how the same people who bang on about 'woman's rights' to kill the fetus inside, which is truely a victim to anything, are also the same ones against the death penalty to people that have chosen thier path in life![]()
You know what, I have no inclination to go on about this... I was only trying to state the hypocrisy in Comrade's vocabulary not actually get into an abortion right/wrong debate which is so utterly pointless....
what makes me sad is that I got sucked into this stupid thing![]()
I'll say no more on the matter...

But what really makes me depressed is how MCcain got sucked into the whole Christian conservative movement. I'm fast losing respect for him, as i don't recognize him anymore.
off subject-
Guilani was truly scary yesterday. It was like a lynching mob. And when did he become an expert on security?

Remember Guilani was about to get kicked out of office before the towers fell... it saved his career and launched it in a whole new way. Never liked the guy. There are a bunch in the Republican party I don't care for... I really would like another Reagan, not a Guilani and Romney, who I think is really good is Huckabee, but unfortunately he has the albatross of being a prior preacher around his neck which makes people jump to conclusions befoer even listening to him.
I think your issues Jon, with McCain, are correct... it is unfortunate in order to win an election you HAVE to have appeal to the base, which McCain never really has done... he really has no choice in the matter if he wants to win... but the same can be said for Obama, he's trying to appeal to so many in a fractured party that I think his abilty to send a clear message gets muddled.... maybe these are the reasons only two other senators have ever reached the White House....

To your a) - what control? Control over hair color, breast size, tattoos, piercings?
To your b) - a close inspection in the mirror will reveal who used the term "murder" first in this thread.

The fact that fuckface McCain and pussylips Palin may be POTUS and VPOTUS makes my skin crawl.
Hopefully some brave patriot will have the balls, a high-powered rifle and two bullets in case this actually comes to pass in November.

Fuck Gordon Brown.
It was rubbish*
Still I finally got the pacamac i've been coveting all this time. Me and Bonz were on the net Friday trying to find stockists and I dropped my beautiful laptop on the floor and all the screen has smashed so it is no longer touchscreen.
Then we considered buying shower caps but were too far away from a Boots.
Got in the pub, to be told they hand them out free at the gig.
Great, I thought, and proudly strutted round in my yellow plastic tent for about ten minutes. Then the wind blew and I was nearly suffocated - death by pacamac!
It lasted ten minutes. Didn't even rain later anyway.
Pffffft
