I'm somewhat surprised you came up with the subject Johnny, cos only today, I was working this one. Except there wasnt much wind. At one point i was pushing it around.

I have to spend some of the day showing people round this one, which believe it or not, is in Brixton.
And later in the afternoon, I have to do a structural survey on this one.

That, young man, is a converted folly, originally built in 1632 by Inigo Jones. In terms of practical design for a working building, it is utterly useless. Its design is so flawed ( i.e. it was built as a folly and NOT a windmill) that it seriously hampered its working life and productivity.

Need to plug in those windmills to some electricity to get them to spin round all the time 24/7... otherwise, what is the point? If they just sit there doing nothing they are useless

Holy crap, just last year I took the family on a 101 drive from Northern Oregon to San Diego... I barely missed it... I never heard of the place (I mean Solvang), I'm going to have to check it out next time... looks a bit interesting...

The one nearest the ocean is closed up because a lot of it is rickety and rotting away. They didn't even touch the thing for the two years I was living there, except to put up some warning cones nearby when one of the big wooden beams holding up the deck fell off.

There were a couple, but they weren't a pain in the arse, surprisingly. A Canadian family turned up, and they were genuinely interesting. We had a great conversation about pine.
While on the subject, I'd just like to say this is the second most beautiful sight in Barnet.

No I don't sell windmills. I do advise on them. I've mentioned in these forums before that I was asked to take photos of one in Kent, because it was feared to be in danger. I had to buy the camera I have now with a 10x zoom, because the farmer, on whose land it stood, kept shooting in the general direction of anyone that got within half a mile of it. I took the photos, and advised the authorities that it was close to collapse, which it did three months later. The previously moody farmer was then on the phone saying 'its collapsed, help', and one recent Bank Holiday weekend, I was invited onto his land accompanied by council workmen and a lorry and crane, to take away and number and photograph what was left, for future restoration.
As I said yesterday, I had to do a structural survey at the owners request on one today.
The long and short of it, and the conclusion to the survey was, 'it's fucked'.
Find half a million quid quickly etc etc.
Nuts are an in the week thing. A job. A wage etc.

Can't believe i missed the open day last Saturday at the windmill i visited yesterday.Was gonna go last weekend too but got invited to a wedding.
One of the sails fell off at an open day in 2006 apparantly.A woman got injured although not seriously.Wonder if she made a claim.

I've been working at one once and a sail fell off a few days after i was there, and took out a parked but unoccupied car. Fortunately we don't live in a compensation culture yet.
I got involved in a court case some while back, when a windmill, built in 1868, and looking like this, was repaired.
They spent approximately £200,000 on the repairs, and fifteen days after the restoration company left, a gale blew in from the west and reduced it to this.
I was asked to look at the wreckage, and it was found the repairers had basically fucked up big time, and were ordered to rebuild it from scratch at the cost to them of about a cool million.

Welllllllllll.... I'm not going to go into any depth, but in 1985 and 1986, I had post exam leave at college, and we were asked to do something constructive with our time.
I spent the Summer down near Canterbury, repairing this one, with its owner. It was at the point of collapse and leaning, and we were constantly going through floorboards etc.
He lent me and a friend a antique caravan wagon thing (like you see at the circus), and we lived in there and slowly helped repair the windmill, which basically needed rebuilding from scratch.
We got timber from all over the place, got donations etc, and ultimately, it took eight years of performing miracles. But it has been a fully commercially working windmill for years now. And every time I go past it, i feel a little bit of pride.

I always a have special respect for a guy that can actually fix and build something and make it look right... especially when its a challenge. Seems less and less of the male gender can even figure out how to operate a screwdriver these days.

what type of wood are the gears made of? Something hard obviously. Do you know how the teeth are put in there? are they dovetailed, tongue/groove, etc?

wrong.
generally made from soft malleable woods, so you can bang them in the slot, and because they can snap off in operation. I prefer hornbeam, others prefer apple, cherry or rosewood.

Not a lot going down in Warwickshire, I'm afraid Johnny.
The ones at Upper Tysoe, Napton-on-the-Hill, Norton Lindsey, are in good nick, as is the one at Berkswell (Balsall Heath, Kath).
The rest, at Harbury, Rowington, Burton Dassett, Kineton and Thurlaston are just empty towers.
